I have been planning a day trip to Munich on the 25th of January from Gatwick and back into Luton. The plan is to drive to Harlington and get a thameslink train but I was looking at 0220 off Bedford but I didn't notice it was runs as required until after I booked my flights.

Does anybody know the chances of this service running? I did see that it did last Thursday, the other option is the 0240 which gets into Gatwick at 0503 which maybe to late for a 0620 flight.

The 0220 from Bedford is showing in journey planners (I've just looked in NRE), so you should be fine. Where did you find it as 'runs as required'?

There are quite a few services that are down run as required for TL which duplicate eg 2 1405’s from Brighton to Bedford, one via Loughborough Jn which is active and an “as required” path through London Bridge. Presumably these are placeholders for when the service resumes regularly through London Bridge. The as required services so come with a yellow box on RTT drawing attention to such whereas the service you require doesn’t have such that yellow box but it does have it in the service description. Probably just a mistake but i imagine there will almost certainly be some service at that time but might be worth contacting TL to confirm.

It would be prudent to check for late engineering works and incidents, but that applies anywhere.

I can't get it to show on the NRE app or Virgin website. This is what prompted me to ask the question.

Some of the overnight TL services were shown as "Q" (runs as required) paths long before the current situation, where almost every train throughout the day currently has a comparable "Q" path for running as a "*T**" headcode service via London Bridge vice any of the longer diversions on routes through Elephant & Castle.

By and large the overnight passenger services between Bedford & Three Bridges, and vice versa, shown with "Q" paths do run. However, a different schedule can be substituted due to overnight engineering - perhaps via Selhurst/Streatham instead of Norwood Jn/Crystal Palace, to give one of several examples. This means it is sensible to have a "Q" path which is never activated and consequently never cancelled, and another service with more accurate timings can be added and used at short notice. Calling patterns at public stops generally remain the same, though staff stops tend to get amended without much notice.

I've been using the timetable overnight Thameslink services fairly often over the last year or two (what joy...) and one tends to find they run pretty punctually and as per the public stops shown. So long as it corresponds with something advertised on a journey planner somewhere, it's usually OK to rely on. That being said, I'm not sure why some sources aren't always showing them on occasion, as they normally do show services in the regular public timetable (or the amended versions thereof), even if they are given "Q" paths.
