I booked a ticket to Brighton through Trainline and applied the 16-25 discount and stupidly thought I could get away with it by using my friends railcard (I already know how stupid and illadvised this is)

I was asked to produce my railcard by an inspector- I lied and said I left it at home. He repeatedly asked me if I had a railcard to which I panicked and said yes. I gave him my name and address and he issued me a little orange slip and told me that as long as I uploaded a picture of the railcard within 14 days I would be fine.

I bought a railcard straight after the interaction so now have one- I uploaded it to the link he provided.

I’m assuming thameslink will see that I didn’t have a railcard when the ticket was issued and that this will escalate further.

What should I keep an eye out for/expect?

I am a current international university student for context.

Welcome to the forum.

You might get away with it but it depends on how diligent the person in the Thameslink prosecutions office is at noticing that you purchased the railcard after you were challenged on the train.

Let us know what happens, if you get a letter from GTR asking for your version of events upload a copy of it in thsi thread, with personal detauls removed, and we will be happy to assist.

If you are a student make sure you can quickly access hard copy post sent to the address you gave them, esp up to and over the next 2 or 3 months at least. If you move address set up a postal redirect via Royal Mail. This is vital as anythign they send you will need to be acted on quickly.
