319's+377's iirc will only stay around 4-5 years, then a total new build will be brought in, speculation these units will be of a fixed formation 8/12 car cutting out space for 2 cabs.

That sounds pretty silly to me - you'd end up with two different length sub-types and less flexibility. Wouldn't 6 car units that can be coupled make more sense?

That's what I thought. Also when demand isn't so high, 12 car trains would be stupid.

On the subject of 12-car trains, that also surprises me somewhat. In any case, the Invitation To Tender should be published by the end of the year.
FCC's response is that they have no further information so I've asked Southern this time.
Perhaps it's old news now (given what FCC stated in response to question 58 on their webchat), but only today have Southern responded. They say that the 377/5s will have interiors identical to those of the /4s, which presumably means (in addition to what we already know) that the First Class areas will be protected by doors and also (I think) that luggage racks will be provided.

Another update from John Atkinson:
FCC CLASS 377 update
The first of these (377501) originally due to be delivered 17-11-08 is
now, I understand, postponed for a week until 25-11-08.

Oh great... :|

Do 377/4s have comfortable seats in both driving coaches or are they all 90 degrees ironing board seats?

They're the same as 377/2s, bar the FC doors and luggage racks.

EDIT: Actually I've discovered that 377/2s have luggage racks as well. However they're always located next to the 2+3 seats (both /2s and /4s).

Having followed the progress of Thameslink 2000 (sic) for the best part of a decade I've never heard or seen anything about 16-car Thameslink trains.

Plans to introduce spacious, longer and more comfortable trains, which will provide an extra 14,500 seats for passengers travelling in South-East England, are set to move a step closer Transport Minister Andrew Adonis announced today.

When the trains start to arrive in 2012, passengers will see many peak time trains lengthened by 50%, from 8 to 12 carriages. By the end of 2015 there will be trains running every 2 to 3 minutes into and out of central London.

Carriages will be joined together permanently to form a train and will stay this way in a 'fixed formation' for the rest of their working life. This will make the manufacturing process simpler and more economical, and allows the trains to work more reliably.

By December 2015 bottlenecks at London Bridge will be eased to enable 18 Thameslink trains per hour to serve this station. Six more trains per hour running via Elephant & Castle will increase capacity through central London to up to 24 trains an hour between Blackfriars and St Pancras International. During the peak hours, the majority of the 24 trains per hour will be 12 carriages long.

My sources reckon there is now no chance that FCC will have sufficient rolling stock for the new timetable next year. Have any of the new 377s even been finished at Derby yet?

The first 377/5 was meant to be delivered last night but was over an hour late.

And got cancelled. A post on the Southern Railway yahoo group suggests that the first 377/5 delivery won't take place for at least another week or two.

Gives me time to get insured on my little beast so I can pop down during the night! <D

About 2 weeks ago, I received a PM saying that based on current schedules FCC would be 9 377s short on the critical March weekend. Regarding the delays in sending 377501 to Selhurst, part of that may be attributed to a fatal incident involving the pan - apparently (according to the SR Y! group) someone working on it died when it unexpectedly dropped down on top on him... :(

The DfT press release quoted by Metroland does speak of 'fixed-formation' trains, so 8/12 car NGEMUs are indeed being planned! Also noted is that 1200 vehicles are currently planned (from 1100 earlier) and the contract now won't be awarded until March 2010 (was Summer 2009).

From what I've heard its likely that FCC will have only a few or possibly no 377s available in March.

i dont think a pan dropping on someone will kill them unless its a freak accident, but touching it will if the unit is live.

More sightings of 202 - saw it twice at Blackfriars in the space of half an hour last Wednesday (reversal in Smithfield sidings perhaps?), and earlier today heading southbound in King's Cross Tunnel. It's also got its footboards back.

Its going to Bedford and back every day. Ive seen in three times while doing station training in the last week but yet to see it go southbound. When it does arrive it displays the stations its calling (well slowing down) at.

Looking somewhat further ahead, the DfT have issued the invitation to tender for the new-build Thameslink stock.

Summary:
Fixed formations, with wide walkthrough connections a definite and articulation an option.

Three types:
160m (eight car) Inner Suburban
240m (12 car) Inner Suburban
240m (12 car) Outer Suburban- to have 1st class, luggage racks and bike racks

Support for ETCS Level 2, and bidders to investigate ATO for central section (ie where they will be the only stock, and where they're aiming for 24 trains per hour)

Pre selected bidders are:
Alstom
Bombardier
Hitachi
Siemens

Interestingg...
I hope when the bidder is chosen the units won't be barbie'd by FCC...

mackenzie_blu, I see on SkyScraperCity that you mention the platform extensions at LTN opening 'in the next few weeks'. Is December 14 the date of reckoning?
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Richard Howe of UKmodernEMU has just revealed that the 4 Southern 319s going to FCC this month are 013, 214, 215 and 216.

To be honest I was told in training but was more interested in the new trains info! I think it ws due for mid dec but dont think we were given a date just next month (training was in nov).

If the platform extensions weren't open on the 14th (and I'm fairly confident they were), then they were definitely opened yesterday as I was there. If tonight's sighting of the HST to Leeds is anything to go by I'd say the platforms are now approx. 250m long, so maybe they're just about long enough for an additional carriage on a 10-car Meridian formation/2+8 HST. Not that it matters - the main thing is that they're long enough for 12*20m trains, seeing as they're longer than 10*23m trains anyway.

As far as Key Output 1 is concerned - that's 1 down, 22 to go. And I've heard that 202's 7-month stint on the Thameslink has now come to an end.

why has 202 gone back down south is it because southern are short of 442's , so 377/2's are running vice 442's.
