At this rate, the 7xx number range will be exhausted by the middle of the next decade given that all new stock ordered for existing 3rd rail lines will likely be mandated as ready to run ac/DC, i.e. no empty pantograph wheels and concrete transformers but full ac kit like 387s .

I don't think the main production 707s are going to have full AC fit, hasn't someone said they are only supplying a couple fully fitted for type approval?

There is the 700, 707, 710 and 717 now!

Was it too complicated to go 701 (because no one starts a count with 0) (TL), 702 (SWT), and 703 (GN) for the Desiro City and 711 (LO) for the Aventra ? They shouldn't be surprised if they quickly come to the end of the 7 series, unless they start stacking some in the middle of 700, 707, 710, and 717, which would be even less logical !

Quite. Though it's fine to start with "0" as the Super Express Trains are showing- CLass 800 for the main batch of Bi Mode, 801 for the EMUs, 802 for the "Plymouth & Penzance" bi modes. Possibly 803 for the TPE lot?

the 7xx series is quickly becoming as much of a mess as the Electrostar numbering:
357: AC Only LTS fleet
375: mix of DC and dual voltage, mix of 3 & 4 car, at SouthEastern
376: metro style fleet for SouthEastern
377: mix of DC and dual voltage, 3, 4 and 5 car, with some fairly major technical variations
378: metro style fleet for London Overground, some dual voltage
379: AC only Stansted Express/West Anglia
387: 110mph Electrostar version 1.5

And of course in the 37x range:
370: Advanced Passenger Train
371: unbuilt "Universal Networker" intended for Thameslink 2000
373: TGV Trans Manche Super Train - the original Eurostars
374: Siemens Velaro e320 - the new Eurostars

Numbering is a mess. I'd have hoped the 7xx range, like the 8xx range, could be tidier. Oh well.

Maybe they got their ideas from Ofcom! :)

The 700/0 have many 0 in them, especially 700001!

707001/002 are coming to the UK as dv units and will have pans removed prior to passenger service. Reason is to prove they work as dv units as part of the acceptance deal as they maybe required to operate as such within thier life times (and all other Desiro City orders are DV orders).

So there is a pattern there then. A bit like number plates going 52 03 53 04 54 etc.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter one bit. Those that need to know, or want to know, will and everyone else won't care.

Indeed. Still unsure why Bombardier's LO Aventra are Class 710 when the CR are class 345. Just makes me think they wanted to out number Siemens.

The 700/717 make sense as longer units that aren't designed to be used in multiple as the original thinking for the 7xx usage was. 707 were given a 7xx as they are part of that family tree.

One of the reasons I always write 700 001.

Or you could right 700\001?

Wasn't there something about the fact that Crossrail has been around, as a project, for some time ?

That's a bit weird. Plus a lot of trains actually have the 000 000 arrangement on the ends.

There was a pattern with new DMU class designations: 170 (171 and 172 assigned later), 175, 180 and 185, but the new diesel powered units for Northern are Class 195 rather than Class 190, which is what I initially guessed they would be assigned based on that pattern.

I agree, at the end of the day it's a class designation and I don't think it really matters that much which numbers are used. By the looks of it, 7xx designations are being used for new unit classes operating in the South East whilst the remaining designations in the 3xx range are being used elsewhere, which I think makes sense. I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the vacant class designations between 700, 707, 710 and 717 assigned at some point, though.

Except for Crossrail's 345s.

Class 700-799 is not limited by geographic area in the source document that introduced the new classes, it is simply for both AC and Dual voltage EMUs, that are not high speed.

Ah yes, I forgot about those.

Thanks for the clarification though, it's much appreciated.

It would surely make much more logical sense to allocate them as class 777887878787? It would fit in much more with the numbering logic.

Our dear friend Class 377/5 has said in another thread to keep an eye on TL this week.

Will they enter service? Will they fail on the first day? Or is he just pulling our leg?

All will be revealed.

What thread is this? Could I have a link?

I think we can all say with confidence that all the Class 700's will be in service by 2017. End of.

A year and a half seems a bit short to deliver more than 100 units.
