My spies at Bromley South have informed me that they've started seeing 700s come through in the evening, empty, presumably on testing and/or training for the Sevenoaks - Kentish Town/Bedford routes. Not sure whether they're confusing them for the 387s, but those are already in service (however limited) down here.

On a somewhat unrelated note, it was only a few years ago that I remember Southern testing the 377/6s, running them empty through BMS to do loops around Kent for mileage runs. I found this most amusing, given that they weren't even going to be used in passenger service on those lines!

Thankfully, this isn't the case for the 700s - they will be running down here eventually, and I'll be somewhat glad to see the back of the 319s. Unless, of course, the rumours are true and Southeastern do requisition those 319s for the VIC-ORP routes so the 465s can bolster the Dartford services.

Again, just theory until it's proven.

700s have begun testing in Kent at night.

Southeastern wont be getting any 319s and are instead gaining a total of 36 377s from SN as reported in Modern Railways Magazine. The first of those should be coming over soon and will begin the transfer of most 465/9s back to metro work.

The late and rather busy 700 I unexpectedly got today had quite a few seats, but still people choosing to stand. I noticed a few people standing in first class, and because the key info goes off in the core, I never found out if the Brighton end was declassified. Nor can you see how busy the train is as a whole. Does anyone know when the trains will begin to show information in the core?

A lot of people boarding at St Pancras walked through into first class and sat down too - all having to walk through a clearly marked door (funny seeing some people not sure whether to push or pull, and somehow not trying either because it's spring loaded and needs a little force!). Clearly I cannot possibly know who had first class tickets, but my gut says that few if any did.

I don't know if they know it's declassified or have just got used to upgrading given the lack of revenue checks on TL these days.

I noticed when on Southern that people just sit in First Class because they know its unlikely anyone will check.

Sutton next followed by Sevenoaks and then the GN.

Quite easy, the annual card allow x amount or return trips. Whether or not they are used is irrelevant as you buy a season to travel every day.

Actually this is completely false information. Try trying for a few minutes and you discover your error.

https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/business-plan

According to this report

https://tfl.gov.uk/cdn/static/cms/documents/tfl-budget-2016-17-and-business-plan.pdf

The budget for London Rail 2015/16 is

Fares income £472m
Other income £26m
Operating expenditure -£557m
Net capital expenditure -£294m

Net investment spend -£354m

So London Rail generates £498m of income but requires £557m to run. That means there's a short fall of £59m PER year. So those profits really are fantasy people. I believe the figure is 50p per person per journey sub.

Compare this to Thameslink where 2015-2021 generates enough to pay back the whole TLP project.

So you decide to belittle me then quote from a document which is now out of date, but which does not disprove what I said. The fact you talk about "profit" shows that you do not know how finances in TfL work.

I will reiterate, TfL has to operate fully commercially from April 2018 as there will no longer be any operating subsidy (it has been cut this year from approx £750m to about £500m. If you don't believe me you can read it in the revised business plan when it's published.

That's good to hear, thanks. I figured getting some hand-me-down 377s would be the alternative, given that most SE Mainline drivers are already familiar with them.

Have 700s been cleared through Penge tunnel? I would expect so because although trains pass at speed, it is a straight tunnel.

I might not be correct, but I think I found the offender:
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/X06789/2016/08/15/advanced

It's marked as a Southern service from "Three Bridges TL" and it boomerang'd via Victoria and then went on the Chatham Mainline via Beckenham Junction to Sevenoaks.

So if that was the 700, then it would have used the Penge Tunnel.

yeh i heard about the 25, just wondering how Southern will fill the gaps now.

The extra 377/5 that won't be used on GN as they now have 29x 387/1s instead.

So an extra 9units to SE but an extra Circa <20 from GN (as SN would have got the 377/2s and couple of the 377/5s anyway (23x 377/5 in total)).

Did the MR article confirm whether they were 377/1 as expected and if so which batch of the /1s?

so guessing they get 377101-136 then...... think thats all of the early batch i think...... (cant remember at what number the spec changed.).

That was what I was thinking but could remember if batch 1 was a 25 or 36 from memory.

The first batch was actually 39 - 19 with 2+2 interior (377101-377119), then 20 with mixed 2+2 / 3+2 interior (377120-377139). Final 25 had Southern-spec interior (377140-377164). No easy way to get 36 from that without leaving an odd one or two with Southern.

I can't say the exact numbers just yet - but they will consist of both early batch and the latter batch ;) Remember they're replacing 465s, so any low density units would be of little use...

377 101-119 are 2+2 only, are they getting transferred?

Surely SE should take some 377/5s instead of the older generation ones which are still SN painted and interior-ed.

At least the Purple 377/5s are closer to SE Blue :D

Does the 36 377/1s release 36 Networkers back to Metro? Struggling to think how they can all be utilised in the peaks given we are no closer to solving the 12-car issues at various places -
  • Woolwich Dockyard's short platforms and with most peak trains stopping there already 10 car in peaks there'll be no increase from now. This limits the Greenwich line.
  • Crayford loop issue so a lot of the rounders have to be 10 which is no peak increase from now is it? This limits the Sidcup line.
  • Charing Cross with its short platforms that require SDO.

So the cascaded Networkers will go on semi-fasts from Medway to Cannon Street which don't call at Woolwich Dockyard and Orpington to Cannon Street? Plus extending all 6 car Victoria services up to 8 eg Vic-Dartford?

Hayes is still 10-car only too right?

So the scope to utilise 36 Networkers seems limited but obviously not if they are coming to metro. Any further details on how they can and will be used?

Perhaps the 377s will form 12-car metro services so SDO can be used? I think that probably belongs in another thread though!

Slightly more on-topic, is there an approximate figure for how many units the new Thameslink Southeastern routes are expected to displace?

Plenty of services to reinstate in 2018 via LBG and into Blackfriars when all the works are done that will need units so some but not much lengthening of metro services...

If they happen as initial published, note the 8 week delay to the consultation start (which strongly hints at "unexpected" surprises!). Checking they can be viably timetabled with NR before consulting is always a good idea:oops::oops::oops:

(Remember Jan 15 timetable into LBG in the am peak...)

Aye that's true. But if the 377s are coming before this year is out that must free up Networkers before LBG is complete which is late 2018? I know the cascade will be gradual (or assume so) but 2 years gradual?

Also keen to see this consultation and how many Southeastern carriages are displaced by Thameslink services. The new Rainham proposal would see 2 Gillingham to CX services displaced, assuming they don't continue as they do provide an important link from the line to Blackheath and Lewisham. I suppose the assumption is going Greenwich and then changing to DLR.

LBG is complete and at final capacity on the SE side on 2nd Jan 2018 (i.e. post Xmas 2017 Blockade).

The original plan saw 25 units transferred before Dec '17 to enable all in service for beginning of 2018

My 700 never made it to LBG (18:42) second time this week. Seems to be due 0 recovery in the timetable and the track defect? At balcombe, for 4 days...

London Bridge cannot cope well with multiple late trains as its still only got 75% of the final track works plus more services that it will have when complete so operationally there a robust approach being made to regulating trains and stopping reactionary delays.

Complete nonsense. The main reason I have a season is to avoid having to spend time messing about at the ticket office each day.

Another example of how out of touch with reality you are.

(Meanwhile, as an aside, funny isn't it. Took a down journey out of KX in tonight's evening peak. 2x365, seats to spare. Went from the main trainshed, so no technical reason why couldn't have been 3x365. That's 50% growth catered for going forward before we even think about standing. This is same loading as I have observed on this service throughout the year. And it got to my destination on time, didn't have to sit with my foot on a ledge, had a table, and the doors opened promptly.)

Out of touch? You buy something that entitles regular use, its your decision if you don't use it every day but that doesn't change the fact that what it allows. Rewriting facts to suit your own agenda isn't helping your case.

Funny how you can't see past your own selfish needs today and want to condemn future travellers to crappy travel because its what you want. Sorry but its called public transport and the needs of the many out weight your personal requirements.

Could we see the 8 cars come in on the three bridges runs first.

That's the situation in mid-August 2016 with many passengers on holiday. If passenger level predictions are correct, there will be a marked increase by the time the TL programme is complete in 2019. By 2030, the levels should have completely transcended the total capacity of the current services with conventional stock including extending trains to 12-car wherever possible.

The figures supporting TLP have already been proven to be too low. Does make you think where will TL be by 2050?

What weekend diagrams? There was a one off for Brighton pride and nought else so far

Correct.

(This is a question mainly for Class 377/5 but others can chime in also )

What is the max acceleration of these things? I've just seen a video on the 700's pull out the station pretty fast. Will it be 2km/h/s or would it go dangerous (3km/h/s? Sorry, I use the metric system).

Also, what's the deceleration?

I have no ideas but its quick. DC acceleration feels like its on AC.

My spies at Bromley South have informed me that they've started seeing 700s come through in the evening, empty, presumably on testing and/or training for the Sevenoaks - Kentish Town/Bedford routes. Not sure whether they're confusing them for the 387s, but those are already in service (however limited) down here.

Again, just theory until it's proven.

There been plenty of trips down that way recently. Thing with Kent is there is far more route to test with Bromley services having to be cleared via Denmark Hill and Beckenham Junction. As well as towards Sevenoaks via Orpington and Bat & Ball. Means lots more trips.

Plan is Kent routes after Sutton.

So you decide to belittle me then quote from a document which is now out of date, but which does not disprove what I said. The fact you talk about "profit" shows that you do not know how finances in TfL work.

Out of date? Perhaps if you'd have followed my link you'd had seen that the document was dated March 2016. Accusing me of using out of date document is further proof of your lack of knowledge in this area.

How the hell you can claim that a massive profit is being generated when the costs are greater than the income just shows me you had no clue.

Just because TfL grant is being changed doesn't mean the Overground will magically be profitable. Especially when fares are being frozen. TfL is making the difference up by selling its assets and expertise to generate cash to fill the gaps.

And if you bothered to use some facts in your reply you'd have know that from the current document that this financial report shows that in 2016/17 TfL Rail will generate £541m in income while costing £588 to run. So the next financial year its again losing money. It will likely get more into the positive going forwards if TfL does it right but once again it exposes the lie of massive profits claimed earlier.

And as for feeling belittled, try using facts and not baseless assumptions which the facts as proven in the real documents I have linked to before (and again below so you can't claim you don't know what I'm talking abut) and maybe people might take you seriously rather than ripping your point apart with a health mix of reality and facts.

Yeah.

Have 700s been cleared through Penge tunnel? I would expect so because although trains pass at speed, it is a straight tunnel.

yeh i heard about the 25, just wondering how Southern will fill the gaps now.

'Southern' is getting 32x 377s from Thameslink while having the Horsham slow route take off it along with 12 car require for the London Bridge to East Grinstead, Littlehampton and Brighton services. At 2tph that roughly 18 coaches per hour saved on the latter three. That's quite a bit.

so guessing they get 377101-136 then...... think thats all of the early batch i think...... (cant remember at what number the spec changed.).

I can't say the exact numbers just yet - but they will consist of both early batch and the latter batch ;) Remember they're replacing 465s, so any low density units would be of little use...

The numbers chosen are a single batch of numbers (I have no idea of manufacturing batches) that SE wanted.

Surely SE should take some 377/5s instead of the older generation ones which are still SN painted and interior-ed.

At least the Purple 377/5s are closer to SE Blue :D

They wanted simple DC only units where as Southern needs in part DV units hence this solution.

Delay I believe is double checking everything thoroughly.

The original plan saw 25 units transferred before Dec '17 to enable all in service for beginning of 2018

Original plan was a min of 25x units and nothing else. The timing was also linked into the 700s taking over certain routes from January 2018 and being linked into Thameslink. For example the Maidstone East 377 services would have gone to 700s and been part of the peak TL service from 4th January 2018. Recent announcements mean that is now up in the air.

Let's be clear. The TfL accounts for 'London Rail' include the operations for contracting London Overground, DLR and Tramlink, and their revenue. Jointly they lose money. DLR is a low cost railway being automatic and with minimal staff at stations.

In 2014/15 London Overground required operating subsidy of 3p per passenger km. The only TOCs with higher figures are Arriva Wales, Northern, Scotrail and Merseyrail. On top of that is the LO share of the 'Network Grant', which is cash that flows direct from Government to Network Rail for the operation, maintenance and renewal of the infrastructure. The national total was nearly £4bn, and LOs share of that would be well into 9 figures.

Source: http://orr.gov.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0005/18842/rail-finance-statistical-release-2014-15.pdf

Taken together, it is clear that The Overground (as a system) loses pots of cash.

If that's it, then the acceleration on AC must be like the E231 Yamanote Line trains from Japan...

Can't wait to see the 700's on ATO!! :)
