Thames Rover (3 Day) with Network Railcard

Quick question about the 3 Day Thames Rover.

Although it's valid Mon-Fri from 0930 or when Cheap Day Return is valid (whichever is earlier) presumably if bought with a Network Railcard it's not actually valid until after 10am?

Correct. Same situation exists with off-peak London travelcards, which are valid after 0930 but only valid with a 16–25 railcard discount after 10am Mon–Fri.

Unless you buy it from a LU ticket office made the mistake once of getting off the bus early and going to a NR station, instead of the LU one I usually went to when I went into London, then I had to use my Oyster for the day (and inevitably had to sort out a maximum fare after spending too long in the system somewhere taking photos :P )

Are you sure? I don't believe that buying one from an Underground station changes the validity. It might be that TfL's staff aren't aware of the subtle difference in validity, but to the best of my knowledge that doesn't mean a railcard-discounted travelcard becomes valid after 0930. Oyster PAYG is a different matter of course.

I'm not too sure actually. Their TVMs sell the £5.60 version at 0930 and they work the barrier at 0930, I've never questioned it myself but...?

Edit: if you question me here's two examples issued at exactly 0930 (I got the bus which got to the station at 0928!)

I'm sure you could buy it without the minimum fare applied at a National Rail ticket office at 09:30 too, if they trusted that you weren't going to use it until 10:00...

It definitely isn't valid until 10:00 but I have to say it looks to be easy to get away with using it before this, if you only use it on Underground or buses at least.

No, this was from a TVM. The TVM did not show the fare at 0929 otherwise I would have bought it then! As soon as the off peak fares came up so did the discount button.

It may be a fault of the system and it may be technically not valid but there was nothing telling me that it wasn't when I bought it, you expect the TVM to sell you a ticket valid there and then!

I'd forgotten about the pre-10am easements. Although not useful for this occasion, worth remembering.

Would it be worth asking the TM on the 0950 from Paddington to Moreton in Marsh if I could use the combination? I suppose the worse that could happen is that he would say No or suggest a single to Slough.

That's an interesting comment. In previous threads on various topics, the machines not giving out discounted fares before they are valid was seen by many as a bad thing ("the train might leave one minute later" for example), yet your comment suggests the opposite to be true.

I'm sure there is a fine line between the two and I'm sure people will expect every station to be specifically programmed to account for it if they did something about it (remembering, of course, that train times can change and that trains can be delayed). Until then I guess the railway will set the ticket machines to a particular standard and expect people to know what they have signed up for.

I thought that the 10am rule does not apply to rover and ranger tickets anyway, or have I missed the point on this one?
