Thames Branches Day Ranger

Today I treated myself to a FGW Thames Branches Day Ranger. My ticket would let me out at Reading only but not in. All the other ticket barriers i.e. Maidenhead, Slough, Paddington kept telling me to seek assistance with code 116.

Was it me :roll: or the ticket barriers didn't like the ticket. Guards and gateline staff were fine and jovial letting me in and out.

If you bought the ticket at Reading, Reading is probably encoded as the origin or destination station on the magnetic stripe and so the ticket barriers will accept it. Which barriers did you use? I'm pretty sure the older barriers at Reading, nearest the ticket office, have let me in OK on a Thames Branches Day Ranger.

I used a TVDR last weekend, and never once did it work the barriers (Paddington, Slough, Maidenhead), though they were frequently open anyway. And in all the time I only got an on-train check once (between Marlow & Bourne end).

I've used a Devon Day Ranger before, which let me out at Exeter St. David's, but not back in again.

I've also recently used a Valley Lines Day Ranger, which let me in and out of the Cardiff stations as many times as I wanted to go through the barriers!

I will second that with the Valley Lines Day Ranger. (Purchased at Manchester Oxford Road)

I brought it at Paddington. The old gates at reading (where all the shops are) let me out but the new ones didn't let me in. I had several checks on trains.

Does anyone know the seek assistance codes at Barriers?
I've had 110 in the past and 116.

apart from Travelcards, I'd agree usually.
Northern Johnston Press offers baffle me. Day tickets work everywhere, weekend ones work everywhere but Leeds!

Exeter St Davids is the only set of barriers which I've find a Devon Day Ranger work. Exeter Central & Plymouth you can forget about it.

Try travelling on something like a FOSS which refuses to open any barriers (probably down to it being multi-day).

A GM Rail Rover opens the barriers at Manchester Victoria, which I was surprised with.

Even travelcards can be hot and miss these days.

My Stevenage - London Zones 1-6 travelcard wouldn't open the barriers at Liverpool Street or Hackney Downs last weekend or this weekend. It worked everywhere else so the way the barriers are programmed must have changed since TfL took over.

How long between exit and entry? Even with a ranger or rover (or travelcard) I think there is still a default minimum time that must elapse.

Plymouth on a Devon Ranger is hit and miss for me - sometimes it works, sometimes not. Last time it worked in and out but that's possibly because I spent an hour and a half photographing buses in the City Centre in between.

I've had similar problems with both the Thames Branches Day Ranger and 3 Day Thames Rover tickets. These days I simply walk up to the gateline attendant and say my Rover/Ranger ticket does not work the gates - the guys at Paddington laugh and say they never work there !
