Thalys Crash

This amazing photo sequence caught the crash of the Thalys
at the moment it happened (second picture of the sequence).
The photographer rode on a BR23 steam engine on the way to
participate in 'steam days'. As they approached Gouda he
wanted to take a picture of the approaching Thalys and as
fate would have it, he caught the moment of impact between
it and the Dutch IC. The dust hasn't even settled yet and
the headlights are still on the accident trains.

As the second picture was taken the BR23 was still traveling
forward according to the photographer. The BR23 initiated
an emergency stop since, as you can see from the switch
positions ahead of it, it was about to be directed directly
into the path of the pileup.

Wow! How could something like this happen- as said, the steam engine was even apparently pathed onto the line that the Thalys must have been on. Presumbaly what should have happened was that the Thalys should have gone onto the far left (from the photographer) track, the IC onto the one next to that, and the steam straight on?

If that on the first link is the moment of impact, it is pretty lucky those men were there on the tracks to help out.

EDIT: The first 4 pictures on the thread in the first link won't load, so the photo I was referring to as the 2nd picture, is actually the 6th.
