TfW Trainee Conductor

Hi all,

To cut a long story short, I have completed psychometric testing twice for trainee conductor/guard roles with SWR/GWR in FEB21 and APR22 respectively. AS far as I know I passed the tests twice as I was offered the job with SWR but I never got a start date, but didnt get an interview with GWR (possibly due to personal circumstances at the time.) This leads me to TfW who only recently got back to me with psychometric testing (again.) I completed the SCAAT before emailing them and they said they can confirm my previous tests are valid an will contact me with next steps.

What does all this mean for me? Anyone who can shed light would be a massive help. Also if anyone has details on the process of jobs at TfW after testing, that would be brill. I‘d much prefer to stay in Wales if possible. Is it even worth holding out hope for SWR considering how long I have been waiting? Their training schools still seem to have a “backlog.”

I know I am asking a lot - but I really would like to know because I want to get out of working behind a desk/wheel and really want to get in the railway, in fact, it’s the only thing I have ever wanted to do besides flying.

Its good you applied to several TOCs. The waiting game for talent pools being between 1 and 2 years can put a lot of people off. If people apply for several they go with whichever one gives them a start date first and then may possibly transfer across once they have got their foot in the door. Well done for passing your interviews for SWR and tfw. Congratulations for making it this far! You are already way ahead compared to the other thousands of people who applied for your job and would be envious of your position whilst waiting for a start date.

I presume you are in a good location with tfw for Cardiff central, Carmarthen and Valley lines etc. As long as you are within 1 hour commute time to multiple depots they can give a job offer start date for whichever depot crops up first. Definitely take whichever offer comes your way when you get “The Call”

Gwr/swr may be dubious of giving you a job offer if your current address is more than an hour drive from your chosen depot. They tend to do google map searches to check your route time. They may well call you to say they have jobs coming up but then declare you are more than an hour from the depot. A lot of people say they are willing to move but i find tocs are dubious of this as well as you have to show proof of address thats within an hour of your depot. They may give you a few weeks to try and sort this out and get back to them but other than that they are quite strict.

I presume you're talking about NXP. I wasn't in llantrisant, but covered a few shifts from there and Avonmouth for Stu. I also presume you mean a First operating company? If, and hopefully when I pass this medical at the end of the month I can tell SWR that the application I had for Basingstoke is no longer required. I've been waiting two years with them but no luck on a start date

Bit of a wait for your medical. At least gives you time to prepare for your medical. Some people may have there’s changed a few times. Youl get there soon enough and still starting same time 9th January. Mine seemed a bit rushed. As soon as I got the phone call to say Ive got the go ahead for medical it was literally one week away thinking great ive only got 1 week to try and get my blood pressure down for my medical and try and book time off work which wasn't much notice. At least you have plenty of time to be more relaxed around it. Im sure it will all be fine. I passed mine in Chester and all seemed easy enough. I am sure you will ace it as well. Let me know how you get on. Just signed my contract and sent it off. Definitely feels more real now lol.

Should be fine mate. They are forgiving of Blood Pressure and have a high acceptance limit. They will only advise you to monitor it throughout your career and give you advice. Youve got a couple of weeks to chill out and relax before medical. Eat well, sleep well and try and lower your stress levels before your medical and don't drink any alcohol.

My appointment lasted an hour.
First thing was urine test as I was busting for a wee after a long drive. They will do the litimus test straight away to test for proteins and sugars in the urine to test kidney function and do a diabetes test. He will let you know the results of this straight away. He posted the rest out for a drugs test.

I asked to check my Blood pressure at the end as I would be more relaxed once everything else was done. He took a few readings throughout and then took note of the lowest reading. I did a breathalyser test for alcohol which came up zero as I didn't want to drink any alcohol all week before the medical.

Eye sight test looking at letters on a wall which got smaller by row. Similar to an eye test you would do at an optician. Colour vision test using Ishihara colour test book. I remember doing this at school where you have to try and find a number hidden in a pattern of different coloured dots. We went through all the numbers. I couldnt see the last 2 numbers and he gave me a funny look saying I wasnt supposed to see anything on the last 2 as only colourblind people can only see the last two.

Next was sound test where they put you in a sound booth with Headphones. You will hear beeps through the headphones and have to press a button every time you hear a beep. The beeps will become more quiet and distant. I Found it difficult hearing all the noise outside the train station and the sound machine and printer chugging away. Trying to hear over my own breathing and heartbeat lol. After a five minute breather he took a final blood pressure reading which came out lower and used that one.

Finally just some medical questions asking if youve got any illnesses or conditions or medical history of anything they need to be concerned about. They will ask how many units of alcohol do you consume a week eg 6 to 8 units a week having a few pints over the weekend and how many days off sick have you had in the past year. Could be somthing like i had two days off for a stomach bug but no further action required.

They may make notes to refer back to on your next medical renewal to make sure everything is ok and see how you manage things throughout your career.

My previous medical history is high blood pressure which he made a note of but was happy to pass me and made notes for me to manage blood pressure with my Gp throughout my career. They will send everything off to hear back a week later for signoff to get your employment contract and paperwork sorted for your start date. Let me know if you get your contract ok next week.

It was pretty quick in fairness, I was stressing myself out over the eyesight test as I knew I could do it but with a lot riding on the medical I was a mess! But talked to the DR and explained that I am okay at dealing with stress, it's just in medical settings I just seem to get nervous over. I had the call today to get all my docs signed. about 10 including a online form?! I also need to go to Cardiff tomorrow for right to work doc checks.

But talked to the DR and explained that I am okay at dealing with stress, it's just in medical settings I just seem to get nervous over. I had the call today to get all my docs signed. about 10 including a online form?! I also need to go to Cardiff tomorrow for right to work doc checks.

My one wasnt too bad, but there was times I felt like I missed quite a lot of beeps, but maybe that was intentional. They were VERY quiet, but there were beeps that were more audible than others. I know I definitely had a few false positives, but I just closed my eyes and tried to focus on it. Overall, it was difficult, but you can only press the button to what you hear. I didnt have any issues with outside noise really. I had one with Medigold.

I had medigold as well based in Chester train station. I hear from others its sometimes Bupa or another occupational health office depending on the availability on where they can book appointments. I struggled the most with the hearing test as well. The booth is a bit rubbish really as you can still hear noise outside. The best thing is to keep your breathing and heart rate under control and control your nerves. I struggled to hear over my own heart rate and breathing and had to close my eyes as well to concentrate. The machine outside kept beeping as well and wasnt sure whether to press the button or not lol. The beeps through the headphones were very faint being far and few in between but pressed the button anyway when i thought i heard something and managed to pass. He gave me a five minute breather afterwards to take my blood pressure again to try and get a lower reading after it was all done and dusted.

Yeah man, just scanned my right to work documents today. Already ordered uniform and staff pass. Dbs came back within hours. Just waiting on references now. Massive relief honestly

Odd, I had an offer letter, P46, contract, job description and a few other little things like the company IT policy!

Did they confirm the location, times etc of the training course with you? I’m quite concerned now.

I received all the above details also via email, had a right to work check and had an email to order uniform, I’m assuming they will get in touch regarding course details next. I live over an hour away from the training place, I’m not sure if they are going to get in touch regarding accommodation or if I’m just going to have to travel?

Nope, I did have a new entrant form too for next of kin details etc. But the offer letter just states further details will be provided closer to the date
