TfW PAYG can you break a journey?

I used the PAYG system a few days ago on TFW on a journey from where Penarth to Caerphilly, didn't need to change trains on the outward journey.
But on the return I had to change at Cardiff Central, there was long delays so I 'googled' could I break my PAYG journey, as you can with paper tickets.

This is what Google told me:

"With Transport for Wales (TfW) Pay As You Go (PAYG), you can break your journey at any station within the zones you've tapped into, as long as you tap out at the end of each leg of your journey. If you don't tap out, you may incur additional charges."

I assumed this was taken from the TfW website, so I thought it would be OK

I tapped back in 20 minutes later and caught my delayed connection.

However, when bill came in it showed as 3 separate journeys and I was charged more. I have checked on the TfW website and can't find any information about breaking a PAYG journey.

No. You can do this if that's what you want to do but you have to pay the single fares for the journeys you make. If you want to pay a single or return fare for a longer journey you can still break, but you have to buy a ticket.

The quid pro quo is that if you aren't breaking you can do things you can't do with a ticket, such as Cardiff Central - Bridgend - Llanharan. I accept that example isn't relevant very often now that more trains call at Llanharan, but on Sundays you can still save time by doubling back to and from these stations which previously was forbidden.

I thought that if you break your journey it works out the equivalent Anytime single or return fare if appropriate? You won't get the reduced PAYG fares though. It won't necessarily show this on the day of travel as it needs to work out what you've done overnight, so should show the next day.

Without knowing what the journey is we can't really say that. Sometimes the pay as you go fare is about two thirds cheaper than the Anytime Day Single so...

The problem with this is that while the hyper-online among us know these are not to be trusted for anything at all, they've now become widespread in the blink of an eye, and are usually difficult or impossible to turn off. The AI panels have replaced previously verbatim quotes from the top results, which, while not perfect, and not in context, were at least a lot more reliable than these "summaries".

Short of everyone in the country changing their default search across all of their browsers and devices to DuckDuckGo, which I'm sure you'll agree won't be happening any time soon, I'm not sure there's an answer here. People are inevitably going to rely on them because they see absolutely no reason not to, or don't notice there's even been a change from the usual results, and only learn their lesson the hard way.

Append &udm=14 to the Google search URL. Don't know about Bing.

There are settings somewhere in Chrome or the Google account settings (do people really stay logged in to Google all day as well as using Google search? Go on, let me tell you everything about everything I do and please store it for ever ...) and hacks such as -AI which will not necessarily work fo rever.

Having seen that URL append is exactly what I had in mind when I was saying it was difficult to do, at least for a typical user who has never worked in a tech field.
