I think the 153s are being used due to reduced demand but I wonder if they are any cheaper than a 150 to run

Also I know the Pembroke dock branch doesn't see a train till 1 currently so there's 1 153 in the morning sitting spare which probably runs somewhere around Cardiff or Swansea
Heart of Wales is also following the Sunday timetable of 2 per day as well and sets will need to swap at some point from Canton to Swansea for these. I think one day I saw a 153 on what would have been a Swansea-Manchester service also, no idea if It was swapped at Cardiff or if something may have been attached to it in Cardiff.

If attached it would have to be a 150 or 158 unlikely it made it but anywho keep a eye out for those pacers my dude as I can't get down to my local station or work

Heart of Wales is running half a Sunday service but nothing to do with Pacers.

I know it isn't, but due to the reduction in HOW services and Pembroke Dock/Fishguard services that has had an impact on Sprinters and as such not as many pacers being required for services which should be booked for Sprinters.

I saw 1 pacer pass by today. Attached to a 158 on what would have been the 1650 Neath to Milford Haven. I don't know whether the pacer was in service or locked out and being taken to Landore.

It wasn't coming to Landore.

Not sure why they would run it with a 158 currently with less Travelers
It does seem rather odd especially if it then went ECS back to Canton from Swansea. Usually at that time of day during more normal times its 2 car pacer or 150 or 158 at that time of day on the 1604 Cardiff-Fishguard so to have 4 carriages makes little sense.

Granted but with less passengers ie only essential travel most rail users aren't there so why have 4 coaches

For once, may as well make use of the spare capacity. Always better to be safe than sorry. In the mornings trains are still carrying passengers. Not sure if it's still happening but during the first week of lockdown some services were 6 carriages!

The trouble is, if there are fewer staff working at the shed, their ability to get units through their regular exams will be reduced too. As a result, they'd want to limit their mileage where possible (with shorter units), to avoid ending up with a backlog of units on exam and no staff to do them!

Get what you're saying but in theory TfW clearly can't be that interested, otherwise they'd just run everything as a single unit. They ballsed up the first day of the lockdown by putting a single Pacer on the morning services down to Cardiff and they were full and standing throughout, because they completely underestimated how many key workers were still travelling. Think they learnt their lesson because the following day when I had to go to work everything was 4 (and that one 6-car I mentioned previously, a 142+143+150). The vast majority of services that have gone past my house in the last week have been at least 4 carriages (the capacity that trains should be during a normal working week!).

Many things in life are a compromise. You've succinctly explained how single units proved to be unsuitable due to crowding, so double units are in service on most services. Going further to triple units (6-car) might require more staff working in close quarters at Canton shed. (I'm disregarding the additional fuel costs.) It sounds like double units are a reasonable middle-ground at the moment.

For comparison, on the skeleton hourly service along the NW Coast, all the trains I've happened to see have been formed of a single (2- or 3-car) unit. Coupled units are a rarity up here, anyway!

Doubles seem to be the way forward. A pair of 150s were on a service earlier.

As for the NW Coast, I don't think there is enough demand to even justify running a single unit (obviously they have to, but certainly not as busy as down south still).

Ones sneaked out into service this afternoon. 142075 took over from a faulty 150 on a Coryton to Radyr diagram.
