TfW On-train first class upgrade cost

I am planning a return trip from Cardiff to Prestatyn, and on the outward leg would like to travel on the 08.53 Manchester loco-hauled service and upgrade to first class in order to partake of breakfast. I would probably then change at Crewe for a Prestatyn train.

I would be planning to buy a standard class off-peak return from Cardiff to Prestatyn, and I see that you can buy a first class upgrade from the conductor on the train. Question is, how is such an upgrade priced, from say, Cardiff to Crewe?

I see that you can potentially also upgrade using Seatfrog, so that is another option.

Any advice would be most welcome!

brfares is excellent for this sort of query.

Cardiff to Crewe appears to be £21 in the week and £11 at the weekend. You may well be able to beat the weekday price using Seatfrog.

Note that food needs to paid for on top of the fare and the upgrade.

Many thanks for that. I use BRFARES regularly, but I now realise that if I enter a Senior Railcard, it suppresses display of the first class upgrades. Similarly, entering a railcard suppresses display of pay-as-you-go fares in the South Wales PAYG area, even though these are often cheaper than buying a ticket with a railcard.
