I was surprised (pleasantly) whilst waiting at Chester yesterday evening for the 20h33 (IT96) back to Bangor. The 17h23 (IW96) from Cardiff that was to form the train rolled in with the loco-hauled set.
I thought that this set was not used at weekends.
RTT states '
'Altered WTT schedule
3rd September 2022 only'

Was this due to a shortage of units?

There was some wrestling on in Cardiff yesterday afternoon. Big events like that and football/rugby etc on a Saturday mean that TfW run one return trip with the loco hauled set to boost capacity. One south in the morning and the return in the evening.

Ah, OK thanks for that, I've only previously been aware of the loco-hauled set being made available for Rugby internationals.

If they can have a loco hauled set running on a Saturday when a special event is on, why can’t they do this every Saturday? (I note that on weekends, 150’s and even 153’s can be running on The Marches).

From December I think they are planning on doing so

Are all Holyhead - Cardiff services currently loco hauled Monday to Friday?

No, half of them (the 0425, 0805 and 1434) are DMUs.

There don't appear to be first class tickets for sale on 0625 or 1041. Do some loco hauled services lack first class? I can't afford an open first class ticket and no advances are available so its more me being doubling sure of traveling on a loco hauled service if I do a trip.

North bound there are first class tickets available for 0645, 1122 and 1716. Which of 0512, 0922, 1322 and 1523 are DMUs and which are loco hauled?

I hadn’t included the 0625 or 1041 as they continue on to Maesteg and Llanelli, but they are DMUs as well.

There are only three loco-hauled services in each direction; the northbound ones are the ones with first class available that you mention. Everything else is a DMU.

The only loco hauled services are:
Ex-Cardiff - 06:45, 11:22 and 17:16
Ex-Holyhead - 05:33, 11:33 and 16:36

There are no plans for any more loco-hauled trains between Cardiff and Holyhead.
