I held a combination of 3 advance singles today, booked separately on TrainSplit, for the 1441 TfW from Llandudno to Llandudno Junction, 1533 Avanti from Llandudno Junction to Stafford, and 1732 LNR from Stafford to London Euston respectively.

The second leg with Avanti was cancelled and the next available Avanti service from Llandudno Junction is at 2036, arriving Stafford at a later time than the last onward LNR service, thus effectively the last train of the day has been cancelled for the purpose of this journey.

I seeked assistance from any other TOC in a position to help, in this case TfW. I asked for ticket acceptance onwards to Chester where other Avanti services were available, but was advised by the ticket office at Llandudno that I would have to purchase a new ticket as they were not notified by Avanti. I was also advised by the guard on the TfW Manchester service that having split tickets mean I do not have one through journey and my rights are not strictly protected, but they would just be "lenient" this time and let me travel.

Strictly speaking, I understand that had this not been the last train of the day, I must wait for the next Avanti as per Advance ticket conditions.

However, since taking the later Avanti would prevent me from completing my journey, should I be rightfully accepted on TfW? Also, surely having split tickets should not reduce my rights regarding connections, and my tickets should still be treated as one through journey?

This was unexpected major disruption to all the train operators in the area, so I think the Obligation to Carry kicks in without any need for notification from Avanti or anyone. The whole point of the obligation is it doesn't need every particular edge case to be discussed and approved when there's disruption.

10-2 1 Obligation to carry
(b)If any event occurs which is capable of affecting two or more trains of an Operator and is likely to result in passengers who are using or wish to use those trains being delayed by more than an hour, every other Operator must use its reasonable endeavours to enable the passenger to complete his journey on its trains at no extra charge.

(5) Compensation
(a) An Operator which carries passengers pursuant to sub-Clause (1) above will not receive any compensation for doing so unless the delay referred to in that sub-Clause continues for more than 48 hours.
