I'm not seeing any 1st class tickets for Stockport to Abergavenny this Saturday 16th. Are they not offering these as they can't be sure trains with 1st class will run. Is the best idea to buy standard and upgrade? Looking at departing Stockport at 1340 1440 or 1540.

Looks like the 1440 has First Class on TrainSplit/forum's site.

With split ticket savings, it's only an extra £5.75 (no Railcard).

The 1340 and 1540 would both be units, only the 1440 should have first class. First class can get rather busy on a Saturday (presumably cheaper advances are generally available?). The forum ticketing site shows first class fares for the 1440 when I search.

But the TFW website isn't offering 1st tickets for this or any journey on 16th. Is that an error? How much would a first class upgrade be?

Upgrades for that would be £22 or £14.65 if you have a railcard (not stated in the original post)

As you eluded to, the loco hauled services are sometimes substituted by units - it happened to me last Sunday, when half of Manchester (seemingly) wanted to get on the 2-coach unit that presented.

Do any of the units have 1st class? I thought I'd read that some of the 3 car units had 1st.

Yes, but it's not presently in use AIUI.

Long-term I believe it is intended it will only be used in 5-car formations. If the 3 runs alone, it's declassified.

No, the 197s have "Standard Plus". That specifically isn't first class but I'm not sure whether first class ticket holders are permitted to sit there without having to pay the supplement.

It won't happen at all now.

Where did you get that impression?

Had it gone ahead I'm sure that they would have done. Academic now as the staff have been told that the scheme has been abandoned and the branding will be removed.

No, TfW 1st class is only available on the loco hauled sets.

AIUI the idea was that 1st class ticket holders would still have to pay the standard plus upgrade, then claim a refund on the difference between their 1st class ticket and the standard fare, as the service offered would be significantly different between the two stock and types. A moot point anyway, as Standard Plus is no longer going to happen and that section of the carriage will just be classified as regular standard class with no upgrade charges (as has been the case since the units entered service)
