TFW commute time

Hi,

I've recently passed the interview stage and am in the talent pool for Cardiff /valley lines. I don't drive at the moment (currently learning) and let them know this at the interview stage.

My question id, is commute time calculated on driving distance or, if you don't drive do they calculate it on commute time on public transport.

I only ask as its a 30m drive but can be 1hr 20-30 on public transport, so wondering if this will affect my chances on getting called up for a position in Cardiff from the talent pool.

I believe that it's calculated on driving time, they will probably want to know how you intend to get to and from work should there not be any public transport running for your start/finishing times, this would also include things like Sundays and bank holidays when your only option might be to fork out for a taxi.

Talent pool for what role?

If you are train crew, you'd probably have to get to your home location before any public transport as you would be the one staffing the public transport! So yes, it might very much be dependent if you don't drive - they'd expect to know how you intend to get in for 4am / get home at 1am.

That's good to know. Definitely need to get my skates on and pass my driving test! Don't want to limit my chances based on this factor

Ah okay. Unlikely to have as extreme shifts as train crew then, so public transport should be feasible. It very much depends on whether the role has a night shift and whether they expect staff there from "start to end of service".

If you're gate line, you shouldn't have too extreme of shifts and depending, you should be done by 8pm most days. However, I've noticed on my route learning journeys that dispatchers also use the CSA role.

Central is a 24 hour manned station, requiring a dispatcher for all trains. That being said, I haven't asked a dispatcher at central what their job role is called or seen a name tag to really notice this.
