Both Crewe finishes tonight Will stand down and be replaced by HD04 and HD07.
HD01s TOE aircon fault has come come back again so it will hopefully get a proper repair tomorrow.

Today will see both sets that are out start and finish in the same place, HD04 will swap to 1W61/1V62 later vice 1w96.

Tomorrow is expected to have 6 sets available, HD01(1V31 start)/03 (1V91 start) /04 (1W13 start) /05 (1V33 start) on the 4 diagrams, HD06 spare and HD07 will pick up the 197 diagram at some point on v37/w59/v50 to get it to Canton for the weekend

Hello! While I am technically new to the site, I have been watching this thread in particular to help with planning previous trips on the Mk4 sets. I'm looking to travel in First Class on Thursday 31st of this month from Newport towards Manchester, either at 11:07 (1W57) or 13:07 (1W59 -- which I took last year on the same route).
Based on information from here and on RealTimeTrains, it looks like when there are problems, 1W59 gets replaced with a 197 more frequently than 1W57 (this seemed to be the case during the heatwave the week before last) -- is this the correct conclusion to draw?
1W59 appears to have been a 197 for the last three days this week, and 1W57 was also replaced with a 197 (only 2 carriages) today -- https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:G56080/2025-07-23/detailed#allox_id=0.
Based on how often these services get swapped for 197s, is it currently too early/risky to consider booking an advance ticket for either of these trains next Thursday?
A related question -- if anyone has been on 1W57 in the past, do they normally have the breakfast menu or the lunch/dinner menu?

Welcome to the forum.

This week 1W59 is booked a 197 so thats why its always showing as one this week, next week the diagrams revert back to what they have been recently with a 67/Mk4 on 1W59 and a 197 on 1W61.

There were a few issues in Holyhead overnight last night which led to the loss of the Holyhead start diagram today, this isnt particularly common. With the diagrams 1W57 and 1W59 are on next week, both are more likely than not to be the booked Mk4s, availability going into next week looks pretty good.

With regards to the catering, as far as im aware 1W57 will be a lunch train once the catering team board at Newport. Theres currently a 50% off 1st class advance fares on some advances so you may find some bargains in 1st.

HD06 will now cover HD01s diagram tomorrow to enable more time to get 01 sorted.

Welcome to the forum. Personally I would book an advance ticket if you are definitely travelling especially as there is a sale on at the moment. Worst case you would get a refund for the difference between 1st and Standard if it was a unit not a MK4. Unfortunately it is still a massive gamble when wanting to travel on a MK4 and esperience the first class experience. On the day any of the diagrams could be a unit.

Ive used the 0853 from Cardiff and experienced the breakfast which was excellent. I think the 1053 and 1253 from Cardiff would both have the lunch menu.

Will 1W96 be a unit then please
So not 2 sets at Holyhead ?
Thanks
It was, and I'll say one thing, it was absolutely heaving. (I wasn't travelling, but I was at Cardiff Central at the time.) Some people were unable to board as people were crowding by the doors.

Today at Crewe depot (23/7/25):

67016 connected to HD01

67020 connected to HD05

67008 connected to HD06

67029 light engine.

HD06 is going in service tomorrow instead of HD01 now if that's correct.

It doesn’t look like
67015 set 7 are going to appear today
No spare crew to prep. It may go back out tomorrow to get it to Canton for Saturday. If its not possible it'll be aimed to swap in at Crewe on Saturday.

Sets HD01/03/04/05 are planned on the 4 diagrams, 06 spare and 07 spare/to Canton.
HD03 is planned a loco swap after 1V33 with 67025 replacing 67010.
