TfW Class 67 - Mk4 Push-pull system

I've noticed that all TfW Class 67s working with mk4s have extra sockets on their noses
I know that's the push-pull thing working with mk4 DVTs
but what's the difference between that and the original AAR system, which works with mk3 DVTs?
