I travel the Welsh valley lines. Specifically the Rhymney line from Cardiff Central unit Ystrad Mynach and every time I can hear what sounds like something “dropping” and what seems like catching something but for the love of god I can’t figure out what it is.

My knowledge (or at least up to date knowledge) of that area is limited. But could be be a pantograph dropping and the train switching to diesel? No idea how far the wires have got recently that way.

The 231s are diesel only, no pantographs on them so it won't be that.
