It's dark so I was unable to get numbers, but I've just seen two 3-car 170s in GA livery with a 153 in TfW livery at the rear speeding through Worcestershire.
170208+170201+153320. Did you get any photos or video or know anyone who has...? I lost my phone at the last minute which is gutting, especially as it so far looks like my video of the formation going through Cardiff Central would've been the only footage as bizarrely I was the "only one" there :'( I was hoping that at least The Hstman2 on YouTube would have a clip of it going through Chepstow or something like he did of 170202 from the day I had to be with family, but that doesn't seem to be the case...

If staff are trained and the unit signed off for use is there any reason why that wouldn't be allowed?

I guess not; I'm just not familiar with how it works with diagramming and the timetable change

As long as it can keep to time it's fine, and considering even the Cheltenhams are pathed as 14x it'll be fine to do so

I guess there's an issue of whether enough staff have been trained. Otherwise you could have a situation where there's a crew change during the day, and the new crew don't sign the unit yet.

(Northern's Chester-Leeds service had a lot of trouble with this in the past year, as the depots kept sending out units that the Liverpool crews didn't sign, even though only Liverpool crews signed the route to Chester via Helsby.)

Without going into too much detail, plans are in place to ensure that doesn't happen. Only a limited amount of crews have been trained so far (Cardiff Mainline is a very large depot after all) but they should be able to ensure only those who have been trained already are rostered to those services.

Thanks for the reassurance (and I appreciate the need for discretion). I had every confidence that such plans were being put in place; I was trying to give an example (for others) of what can happen if you rush new units into service asap.

One of the class 170s is out in passenger service today on the Ebbw Vale line. Gen on Facebook suggests its first trip is the 0635 Cardiff to Ebbw Vale and 0737 Ebbw Vale to Cardiff.

Its last trip is supposed to be around 1330.
