The Cardiff Valleys services, which for generally refers to all services that run through Cardiff Queen Street, are in a period of transition.
231s now work most Rhymney / Bargoed to Barry Island services,
150s still work Rhymney - Cardiff - Barry - Bridgend (the Vale of Glamorgan line)
153s and 150s work Penarth - Coryton / Caerphilly,
and 150s are still the mainstay of all services through Pontpyridd, with 231s turning up occasionally.

756s should start operation on Pontpyridd lines by the end of this year, with the 398 tram-trains due to start on Pontpyridd lines next summer.

During the Queen Street closure last week that resulted in the Rhymney, Coryton and Penarth lines being completely shut, there were extra units available for the rest of the network. Double 150s and 150+153 combos were providing much needed extra capacity on the 1tph VoG services. Some double 150s also worked on some services through Pontpyridd.

Today the Penarth - Coryton / Caerphilly services are almost all double 153s, which is overkill in my opinion. Single 153s could work these services to allow extra 153s to be added to the single 150s to boost Rhymney - VoG services.
I'm aware of the reasons why 231s can't run through the VoG (mainline crews don't yet sign 231s) so TfW could at least juggle around units to boost VoG capacity in the meantime.

11th november should see the 1st diagram on the valley lines go over to the class 756s
Yes and these can't come soon enough. But in the meantime and until mainline crews are trained on 231s and 756s, the VoG line will continue with 1tph single 150s, which is just not sufficient. Hopefully the introduction of 756s will begin to release 150s to boost capacity on other services until they are withdrawn
