I use the tfw app on my Samsung android phone. I find it reasonably easy to use ... though perhaps it's because I'm used to it.

One issue I find very annoying is the app refreshes itself regularly, perhaps (though I'm speculating) related to Internet connection which, of course, will be patchy when travelling.

It's extra awkward when travelling with a virtual wallet full of split tickets and you're fumbling around waiting for the app to restart and then trying to find the relevant ticket while the poor guard is stood there waiting. Also happens when you get off a train, by the time you get to barriers the app has refreshed and you're held up while you wait then find the right ticket.

Anyone else experience this? If so is there a solution or better app?

Thanks

Are they 2D codes displayed on screen? If so, is it possible to take a screenshot, and save it in the photos album, which you can keep open? I do that if I have codes that may need to be shown without having a data connection. (Obviously if they use electronic data transfer that's no good).

When buying tickets using Northern's app, they send a receipt with pdf tickets attached as well as having the tickets available in the app. Does the tfw app do that?

It does, if you've chosen e-ticket "delivery", which is now the default in the app. (Previously M-ticket was the default in earlier, so no pdf. TFW "multiflex" tickets are only available as M-tickets in the TFW app)

I thought that TFW did not do split tickets?

Recently I had a problem trying to book a Bristol to Crewe (via Hereford) open return.

Somehow I had chosen the m-ticket, rather than e-ticket. At the time I hadn't appreciated the difference.

I booked during a tea break at work, to avoid queuing at Temple Meads, and selected my outbound train for later the same day. I didn't know exactly when I wanted to come back, so just selected (anytime) open return.

The outward journey downloaded ok, but when I reached Crewe I realised I had no return ticket in the 'wallet'.

I emailed TfW and then called them and and they couldn't understand why I didn't get a return ticket. I managed to get back ok with the info I had on the app and booking email.

So is it possible to select open return and get just that i.e. no need to specify a return train?

I don't use it for tickets so don't have that problem, but I do use it to check that I've successfully tapped in with PAYG and my complaint is the way it randomly logs me out even when I've been using it regularly.

Does the TfW app allow you to save tickets to the Samsung or Google Wallet? These are generally much easier to use to find tickets.

They don't. I buy them individually on the app. Went from Cardiff to Hull this week which caused me to finally ask the above. Splits at Cheltenham, Worcestershire Parkway, Birmingham and Derby.

Many thanks for response. You must have saved a fair bit of commission that the split sites would have charged - unless buying each leg individually on such sites.

No problem.

I do use the split ticketing sites and pay their commission, including the one on here, but you're right, commission on above trip was a lot, plus it's simple enough to buy each leg on the app anyway.
