Could you elaborate further? Do you want information about the role of a tube driver (as what your statement suggests?) Or would you like information with regards to the assessments (as the title of the thread?).

As your username implies, it would seem you already work for TfL. If that's the case all the information you could want/need is on Source.

Four tests, don't ask for tips, as I failed it!

Following information. Reading a passage and answering questions.

Understanding information. As above but more technical prose. Mine was about ball bearings.

Concentration test. Cross out patterns of dots/shapes as quickly/accurately as you can.

Fault finding test. Identify faulty switch/bulb in a sequence.

Best of luck.

That explains AC1. If successful you will then go on to AC2 which is a recorded voice test and a competence based interview.

Hi there

Seems a bit complicated these days.

My experience was basically walking home from the pub at night, getting hit over the the head and waking up the next morning at the White City Training School learning about triple valves and 7 step relays which was totally irrelevant as I went to the Piccadilly with their wizz bang 1973 TS.

Sorry I haven't been much help, but good luck with your driving career (and always hang on to the early spare shift, you'll be home by 10:00) :)

Cheers

Well from what I remember there were about 40 questions for the understanding information test and about 35 for the following information test. For the error Id there were about 30 odd questions. To be honest you don't need any additional practice material. Just make sure you are comfortable with the practice material provided. Just keep going over and over it and it should be a breeze for you. I messed up in the competence based interview. I didn't prepare for it at all and thought I could go in a blag it lol. Luckily I got a job as a trainee driver 5months later and I made sure I prepared for my interview Haha so the moral of the story is preparation is key! Good luck my friend

Thank you for that info Gekko, and for the message of support! Yes I'm pretty confident in the tests just need to brush up a bit more in the understanding info section as its a lot of info to take in! So I think eliminating the useless info and finding the answers in the passage is key!

Also I don't suppose anyone knows how many grids of SCAAT you do on the day, I have been told the test is 19 minutes so surely there can't only be 3 tests as in the practice materials as this seems like too much time for only 3 grids!

For the SCATT test first you will have to search for one shape in particular and there are 3 grids for that. You will have a certain amount of time before they tell you to move onto the next grid. Next you will have to cross out two shapes across 3 grids again with a time limit on each grid. For the last one you will have a shape in particular you will need to cross off but also the first shape you see in every line. Again there are 3 grids each with a time limit. You do get alil practice before you start so you get yourself familiar with it. Try not to panic and rush through. Keep calm and you'll be fine. You're not going to get to the end of the grids just make sure accuracy is high.

Thank you Gekko, if I am successful in AC1 I owe you!
Honestly I'm glad I joined this forum, was a little sceptical at first but it's a really friendly helpful bunch on this!

You listen to an incident report from a driver. You need to take notes and then 'report' back what the driver said. The assessor will record you with a Dictaphone thing. I have a slightly stammer, so did struggle a bit with nerves making it worse. You also need to decide which parts of the drivers report you think are relevant, as you don't have time to write down everything he says. Myself and other candidates all agreed he waffled too much.

Do underground train operators have to do MMI ?

No. LU assessment is completely different from mainline. You only have two stages of assessment. AC1 which is written tests. Then AC2 which is the recorded voice test & a competency based interview. You are given the competencies prior to the interview.

Only annoying thing is that TFL don't provide feedback to external candidates.

Which is entirely realistic, and thus why it's there. Anyone who's through successfully will see how much waffle there is from station staff, train operators, controllers, LIAs, shunters... the list goes on. Except us signallers. We don't waffle.

(Of course we do.)

Good luck to everyone applying.

Great. Does that mean the two-lives rule doesn't exist for LU ?

From what I've heard no, although hopefully someone else can confirm.

LU don't care about any mainline applications you've made. Neither will any TOC care that you've applied with LU.

Is the CBI they do similar to the MMI TOC applicants have to do then ?

It's similar in terms of the way they ask the questions and how it's structured. Although the competencies are different. The only two I can remember are Customer Service and Health & Safety.

Well done on passing your AC1, I have my AC1 next Wednesday at Ashfield House.

Got any pointers or can confirm what was involved?

Many Thanks!

very annoying. I failed my AC2 and would’ve really appreciated some feedback, especially as I felt I had done well on it. I left that assessment feeling a LOT more confident that I did leaving my AC1. I guess I’ll never know where I went wrong.

Hi, do you know if they externally advertise for Train operators for TFL? Or do you have to be already a part of the company. Responses appreciated!

they do advertise externally but it would be a part time Fri and Sat nights, after doing it for a year it's possible to apply for a full time
