I live along TfL route 180 (Lewisham-Belvedere) and have noticed the last few months that the route is increasingly operated by new-ish looking buses that have striking curved design, very attention-grabbing to look at and quite reminiscent of Boris Routemasters (In fact the first few times I saw one, I thought they were Routemasters! They aren't though - they lack the back doors and have much bigger windows upstairs). They also seem relatively comfortable and quiet to ride on. So I'm curious - what are they? Does anyone know anything about them?

They are Alexander Dennis Enviro 400 City's, on a BYD D8UR chassis, Stagecoach has 72 in service in London, with plenty more across London with other operators. Metroline has some on the 43 and RATP operates them on the 94 at least. Also plenty outside London with Stagecoach Manchester, National Express West Midlands and First Glasgow....

I think they are Enviro400EVs, manufacturered by Alexander Dennis Limited and BYD. (ADL make the Enviro400 "City" bodywork; BYD make the chassis)
The reason they are quiet is that the are battery electric, so no diesel engine in the back.

There are some elsewhere in the country (I saw them when I went to Manchester a while ago) as well and I also find them to be very comfortable. The ride seems quite smooth and refined, unlike some older non-electric Enviro400s which can be very rattly and have very hard suspension.

There are 10 allocated to Plumstead for route 180, 14163-14172. Older hybrid buses make up the rest of the allocation on the route.

They are BYD DDs, D8UR is the single-deck version.

The 180 used to be ran by GoAhead, but they recently lost the contract to Stagecoach
