TfL Nominee Oyster

Hi,

Does anyone know what the situation is with a TfL Nominee Oyster Card that is temperamental? The wait for a new one is 8 weeks, which is insane.

It sometimes works, and sometimes it doesn't work. A new one has been applied for and nowhere on the form did it state the current oyster must no longer be used. Staff have given contradicting advise - from it's fine to use it as long as you have the photo card (this is mainly been the case) except one staff member who said no it can't be used.

And the same question above, (if it can't be used) but it does tap in (as occasionally it still does). Would that be allowed? It's all highly annoying as the oyster isn't lost or damaged. It's just decided to not work fully.

When I lost mine (staff version) it was understandable that I had to wait for a new one as I physically didn't have an oyster to even show, but with this one, as my partner still has both cards, and the cards have numbers on them that can clearly be checked in the back office to show it's valid, I'm not entirely sure were we stand.

We do use this card a lot and it's once of the reasons why I'm working for a TfL based TOC rather than just a National Rail based TOC.

Thank you,

I know this isn't the main point, but I would suggest that it IS damaged if it's not working properly. The fact that you can't see the damage doesn't change that.

Noting the two digit error code that's displayed on the gate when trying to use it would help diagnose the issue.

Also be aware that, like Staff Oyster cards, the Nominee ones have limited validity on National Rail services:
  • Elizabeth Line: All services, though is unlikely to work on gates beyond West Drayton out to Reading, so will need to be shown to a member of staff.
  • London Overground: All services
  • Amersham - Marylebone
  • Finsbury Park - Moorgate (via Drayton Park only)
  • Fenchurch Street - Upminster
  • Stratford - Liverpool Street
  • Kentish Town - Elephant & Castle/London Bridge
  • Euston - Watford Junction
There is no validity on any other National Rail services.

I reapplied for a nominee oyster 2 months ago, and although they said 8 weeks processing time, it took a little over 2 weeks.

TfL should disable the old/current card the moment they receive the application for its replacement, therefore shouldn’t be used the moment the application goes out.
