Slightly dumb question

My lad and i are doing a leisure attempt to cover every line within the osyter boundary and that means each line, both ways, when travelling to football.
The real PITA are the north Kent loops Slade Green/Barnehurst/Crayford which do not run weekends looks like it will be half a day off work and a midweek fixture to complete, plus the Beckenham Junction branch from Crystal Palace ditto

Just noticed that on the new map, Hertford East is now included in Zone 9 ( we do buy travelcards for this as we once fell foul of the timeout on oyster between zones once)
So when we have to go back to N London to do this addition a Travelcard 1-9 should suffice,
However the Merstham-Gatwick Airport section does not appear to be allocated a zone on the new map, but seems to indicate it would be in Zone 7. Searches on the web do not come up with an answer, so is Gatwick now in Zone 7?

Gatwick is not in a zone, (same as Watford Junction has been for a long while, accepting Oyster but not in a zone). Best thing to do (if you are only going to Gatwick and back, and otherwise staying in zones 1-6) is to buy a 1-6 Travelcard and a return from Boundary Zone 6 to Gatwick Airport for a couple of pounds.

It is important to realise that there are special zones beyond the numerical zones 1-9, as well as stations where special fares apply.

In the original poster's examples, the small area containing Broxbourne to Hertford East is not zone 9, as there is no 9 printed in it. AIUI this is fare zone B?

Compare this detail of the map with how it is drawn near Watford Junction, (as already mentioned) another station often wrongly assumed to be in zone 9, as can be seen although it is just 'beyond zone 8', it doesn't contain a 9...
