TfL Fares Anomalies

Transport for London seem to have some fare anomalies on journeys from London Overground stations
For example, a single from Finchley Road & Frognal to Putney via Kensington Olympia and Clapham Junction is £2.80 whereas a single to Clapham Junction is £5.50.
Another is Haggerston to Hackney Central costing £5.50 but continue to Hackney Downs via the walkway between the two stations then onwards to Rectory Road or Stoke Newington and the fare is reduced to £2.80. All stations are within Zone 2.

Can anyone provide an explanation?

Yes, that is because paper tickets for journeys wholly for travel on London Overground (North London Line) are charged at a rate intended to discourage their use.

The Oyster / Contactless singles are:

Finchley Road & Frognal to Clapham Junction £1.70 (peak) £1.50 (off-peak) on Oyster / Contactless
Haggerston to Hackney Central £1.70 (peak) £1.50 (off-peak) on Oyster / Contactless

The other journeys are priced on a mixed-mode basis and paper tickets continue to exist at the relevant fares.

Presumably, in the Finchley Road & Frognal via Clapham Junction to Putney example, you can legally break that journey at Clapham Junction and hence save around half the price if you want to get to Clapham J? (Which would make sense to do if you didn't have an Oyster card and were using a paper ticket.) And even if you did have an Oyster, if you had things to do at Clapham J and really did want to get to Putney later, then the paper ticket with break of journey would be cheaper than two separate Oyster journeys.

By the way, i don't understand why a paper ticket for a NLL-only journey is deliberately priced at about three times the Oyster fare. It hardly seems fair.

There are zonal tariffs for point to point fares in London, just as there are with Oyster fares. They're just not published.

I wouldn't worry too much or shout too loud about it!

That is just how TfL have chosen to set up things, the same on the underground where the paper fare is also £5.50. They want people to use Oyster and Contactless, not paper tickets.

You are right that paper tickets offer break of journey which some people might find advantageous but equally the convenience of Oyster and Contactless appears to be highly appreciated by passengers.

Yes, Mr Marshall picked up on such an abnormality because Plumstead is a mixed modal NR fare and Abbey wood is XR/TFL fare already in the system a bit early
