Hi all,

Slightly worries as my cousin received a letter from TfL regarding a recent fare evasion. He was caught fare evading and had his details taken. He provided an incorrect name but the correct address.

See attached for the letter.

Believe it or not he actually has a job offer from TfL, which is why he provided a wrong name.

On the back of the letter he will have to obviously put the name he provided along with other details. He accepts that he committed a crime. Once this has been sent will he be able to pay the fine immediately? What is the usual proceedings after receiving this letter?

Are there any recommendations on how to avoid going court as the idiot decided to give them a wrong name which is a crime itself if I’m correct?

Please obscure the case number at the top of image two.

I have removed the offending image with the case reference number.

We need to know exactly what happened to be able to let you know what is likely to happen. TfL do take a robust approach to fare evasion and many cases end up being prosecuted.

Giving a false name is a criminal offence in itself. I would imagine TfL will take a dim view if someone with a job offer is convicted of a criminal offence comitted on their network.

He's put himself in a very, very difficult position.

TfL tend to take a hard line and rarely offer out of court settlements. So fare evasion generally results in prosecution. At some stage the false name may well become obvious. Presenting a false name to an official is an offence but if a false name is presented to a court I suspect the offence is far, far more serious. Possibly perjury.

So it may not be wise (to put it mildly) to carry on with such a pretence.

Given a job offer at stake is this as an occasion when solicitors advice ought to be sought?

What sort of job has been applied for at TfL? Is it directly or a contractor

I presume the name of the person at the address was known to them?
