Hi all,

I had a day of travelling around on the tube, just to kill curiosity and interest. I was bored, and wanting to do this for a long time but due to work for me it's hard to find time during the week, with the festivities this was my shot.

Before I did this I checked in with a worker on the gate, who was very pleasant and explained how the contactless works, as I had a few questions.

Anyhow, cut a long story short a fee of £29 has just come out from my bank, where as I expected maybe £5/10.

Can I get a itemised receipt from tfl to show me how this has been calculated, as this to me looks like a maximum charge for something, not a calculation of my trips because I didn't go far.

I did a trip from St Pancras, to White City, not leaving the station, then back to Camden Town where I did leave.

Then Camden Town to Euston where I left again to visit a pub which was closed, so back on at Euston to Queen's Park, didn't leave... then back to St Pancras.

I stayed for around 1 hour at White City, and maybe half hour at Queen's Park.

Any help appreciated thank you

*to add I've just managed to get the info

I've been hit with x4 maximum charges, at £6.70.

What I was told by the staff at the gate line was obviously wrong, im very angry and upset with this

Do you have any missed taps? Or too much time between stations?

Long live a paper travelcard!

I've since managed to apply for a refund on 1 part, and I've sent a email with regards to the other 2,

It shows St Pancras to blank, and blank to St Pancras, this is where I tapped in, stayed for a while to take some photos and have a mooch and then I tapped out again around a hour or so later. Hoping they will rectify it for me and see I never went elsewhere

If you read up on TFL they are very clear on what charges will be levied for same station entrance and exits.

No missed taps 100% I was very cautious with it all, is the time limit 2hr? That's what the guy told me, however I haven't exceeded that and it shows on the statements so that's fine!

It sounds like you may have exceeded the maximum journey time on a couple of occasions (so you were charged maximum fare for a journey you didn't complete, and then another maximum fare for a journey where the starting point wasn't known).

This is well documented on the TfL website: https://tfl.gov.uk/fares/refunds-and-replacements/exceeded-maximum-journey-time and https://tfl.gov.uk/fares/how-to-pay...y-as-you-go/keep-within-maximum-journey-times

Don't be; if you speak to the helpline they can rectify the charges by adding the missing taps and you now know to tap out before you time out the journey.

Yep, more than 30 mins. Not sure why the gate guy told me I was fine for 2 hours, anyhow live and learn, I will not be joyously travelling the tube anytime again soon

Thanks,

I've sent 2 emails now but wondering it may be worth a call to be clearer over the phone.

Might be the issue of unintended OSI which TFL thinks you exceed maximum journey time. I had experience several occasions which TFL automatically link 2 different journeys into 1 when I changing between stations and breaking my journey for more than 30mins+ (e.g. tap out at embankment tube, grab some food and tap in at Charing Cross Rail). Daily cap would be reached but they charged me 2 maximum fare. It's very hard to get a refund too so I just have to sucked it up very often.

My worry, I'm too easy going to keep chasing them, I've sent an email but I won't keep going back at it if they keep asking more. Worst case it's a lesson learnt and I won't be doing it again.

If you're going to be doing 'bashing' it's generally advisable to get a paper ticket or Travelcard, to avoid maximum fares being incurred.

The maximum journey time depends on both when and where you touch in and touch out. The minimum maximum journey time (as it were) is 1h10 (in zone 1 it is 1h30). The maximum maximum journey time is 3 hours.

If the time between touch in and touch out exceeds the maximum journey time permitted for those touches you will be charged two maximum fares.

If you touch in and out at the same station then, if you have been there more than 30 minutes, you will be charged two maximum fares. This will explain the two at St Pancras.

Anyone who is doing some bashing is recommended to buy a paper Travelcard. Contactless and Oyster are really designed for people doing point-to-point journeys and anyone bashing is likely to hit issues with maximum journey times.
