I'd assume there'd be an ambition to achieve a substantial percentage, nothing set in stone but govt encourage employers to positively discriminate.

In this case it was probably related to the interview feedback HR sent to the candidate - I'm guessing he/she would have proceeded on to an employment tribunal - I reckon something like this would be a automatically successful case.... thus sensible for employer to create an extra post rather allow it to proceed to court.

I agree - add in the whole area of unconscious bias and you can see why it is almost impossible to make interviews completely prejudice free. Its humans dealing with other humans after all
Certainly the initial selection of candidates could be done blind to age, gender, religion, etc etc, as this part is more based on the person's qualifications rather than face-to-face interaction.

What constitutes as a "disability"? Hearing or Vision Impairment are not categorized as disabilities...I could be wrong. Or maybe these are based on a percentage of how blind or deaf a person is...

This link is quite useful and it seems while there are a few illnesses that are automatically categorised as a disability (cancer, HIV, MS and a couple of others) it does depend how much it affects your daily life

Considering the statistics on that page only count those that got to the assessment centre 2 stage of the process . I imagine that a considerable amount of it could be explained by statistical noise.

This FOI request does appear to be a single person harbouring a grudge but it is fair to raise the issue of age discrimination which is an issue for both younger and older applicants. Although my personal opinion is that bias against younger people in the workplace is lessening quicker than it is for older people.

Seen an interesting one this morning. An external candidate was refused on their sick record, which was asked about at interview. The candidate can substantiate the sickness being caused entirely by their disability. As the candidate declared the disability the employer has done a swift U-turn and created an additional position.

This sounds potentially like someone in HR bricking it and realising the interview panel has made a serious error in asking a question of that nature and seeking a resolution which eliminates the risk of legal action.

govt encourage employers to positively discriminate.

Govt may encourage positive action but positive discrimination is predominantly illegal in the UK with the exception of the aspects of disability legislation and certain maternity related employment legislation.

I had a driver manager interview for a Toc and was very pleased to hear that to ensure the fairness of the recruitment process the names ages and genders of applicants are removed from the files and all applications are judged on experience and test scores only. It pretty much boils down to, if you have what they want they'll hire you and if you don't...they won't. If I get rejected I don't ask for a bloody FOI request. Ha ha..I just accept I wasn't good enough and work on it.
