Hi, made a day trip to Manchester yesterday. Tapped in at Piccadilly on the tram and tapped out at New Islington. On the return journey tapped in at New Islington and on arriving at Piccadilly there were a lot of revenue inspectors. They told me to tap in on the inspector's handheld machine and then tap out at one of the platform machines. All taps resulted in an OK and a green tick.
Looking at my credit card statement this morning, I see a debit for only 10p. Now clearly that is incorrect but presumably as they now have details of my credit card, does anyone know if I'm likely to get any comeback or penalty for not paying the correct fare.

Completely normal, 10p is charged initially to ensure the card is valid and is a holding charge.

The correct fare will be deducted at a later point, normally 1-2 days later.

TfL does the same thing, I always get notified of a 10p debit when I’m on my first journey in London using contactless.

Thank you for both of the replies. I've never had to do this in London as I have a retired TFL staff pass. And normally when I go up to Manchester I buy a rover ticket from the machine. Thanks for putting my mind at rest,

Just to add to this, if you hadn't touched in at a tram stop before the RPI scanned your card, you would automatically be charged a £60 Penalty Fare. Touching in but not touching out within two hours incurs a charge of £4.60 (the maximum Single fare on Metrolink.)

Bonus Points: According to TfGM, validators not working at a stop is not a valid reason not to touch in! If that happens, they expect you to buy a ticket from the TVM instead even if you're nearing (or over) the daily cap.
