Text Messages

Lol am i the only person that can’t get on with text messages. What happened to phone calls?. I gave someone me wife’s mobile number to call me. What do i get a bloody text message. After 15 mins trying to do one back i gave up. Lol

I prefer to text rather than call because people can reply at their convenience and there is a record of what was said!

Sometimes - if I want a simple bit of information, a yes/no answer, or a time for something - it can be more trouble than it's worth to make a call, especially if the person I need to get in touch with is likely to be driving or otherwise unable to answer.

On the other hand, if something can't be easily dealt with in a single message, then I'll pick up the phone. I can't cope with half hour SMS conversations.

Telegram vs telephone. If you want a cheaper, simpler message (e.g. "arriving 1758h Hitchin") then there is no sense wasting a whole minute of telephone time when a text costs less.

I prefer to text because it is far more discreet than a call - it's far easier to listen in on a phone call than it is to spy on a text. In addition it's far easier to get a lot of messages than minutes on a plan

What's more texting is short and to the point. Calling has it's place but most of the time it's easier to fire off a quick text.

B: Yeah, where?

B: OK, half 8 ok with you?
A: Yes

I rarely perform a SMS text message via mobile phone
There is occasional use for business use, to keep a record of specific tasks
Everything else in a text format goes via email

Predicted text has got a lot better since the days of T9. Modern phones have much better predictive text (even having penguin in)

I used to HATE texting before I got a Blackberry with a full QWERTY keyboard - I do it all the time now, it's so much easier.

To be honest, I don't care much for all the new designs of mobile phones, i.e. iphones. Whatever happened to the days when phones were just simply devices to call people? Yes, I admit some of the applications for phones are sometimes useful, however most of them are a waste of time. It encourages children to spend excessive amounts of time texting and other things and also means that they (or their parents!!!) have to part with unnecessary cash to fund the expenditure.

You can buy these phones designed for older people (although you can be any age) that just have buttons and a screen, binatone make them.

Well, even though I am part of the mobile phone generation, I used to think the same as you. I had a crap LG phone, but then I got a Blackberry and realised that it was actually a really sturdy phone that has a decent battery and could call and text people easier!

One of my main criticisms about these iPhones is that the battery is CRAP! The BB seems a lot better...

I have an ageing Motorola C115 (which I had to look at the phone to find out). It works fine, is light, robust and simple to use. Nothing wrong with it, so I won't get another one until it breaks. Yes, it's a Pacer Phone!

A spirit level app? My dad would like that one for his DIY!

Sadly, he has an old Nokia brick phone (which is almost dead I believe).

Someone wanted them and was willing to pay for it. I still don't get what you have against text messaging, I bet you don't have the same problem with email which is much the same thing. Out of interest if phones were only used for calling people what do you suggest for those who are deaf or partially deaf?

Sure, some apps are stupid but then some apps are excellent. Google Maps for one, I've used it twice to ensure I have arrived for interviews in good time. A lot of the simpler apps out there are made by amateur users who are trying to write code and releasing it is a way of testing it. I still think computer programming should be taught as standard in schools as part of GCSE IT but I fear this is no longer the case thanks to lobbying by the likes of Microsoft who don't want people learning their secrets in the OS.

Neither do I, I have a HTC with Android and the level of control over the phone is outstanding

Indeed. I prefer to use proper spelling and grammar in my text messages (character count permitting), which meant composing a message on a 0 - 9 keypad could take some minutes! Since I acquired a phone with a QWERTY keyboard it now takes seconds rather than minutes, definately worth the extra expense.

I would have probably replied with similar...with something like that, if I needed a spirit level, then, oddly enough, I'd use a spirit level

Haha - my phone appears to still use T9! Just tried it and penguin isn't in its repertoire as you suggest. Annoyingly, nor is octagon. In itself, that may sound like it isn't a problem, but our uni has a building called The Octagon (anyone want to guess why ) so it can get a bit annoying!
