Test train information help?

Hi everyone really new too this forum and back into railways after a few years out I have just started a model railway and have been given two serco rail test carriages RDBMS 977470 and 975985... Does anyone have any idea what the two vehicles are used for in a test train ? I would be truly greatful for any help many thanks josh :)

From googling around: 977470 - Serco Brake Force Runner.

Not sure about '85.
