Test train abandoned at Brotherton

I see that 1Q28 test train, failed at Brotherton today at lunchtime after hitting a trolley at Ponte Baghill, apparently won't be moving till tomorrow ( Monday) morning, is that a record for a delay?

It depends on when it moves. It might not even be the longest delay this weekend as 6M89 was abandoned at Warrington RMT last night due to OHLE problems at Winwick and after being scheduled to arrive at Ravenhead at 17:56 finally got there at 11:09.

Apparently a replacement part is needed and the Loram stores (presumably Derby) opens at 0700, so it'll probably be longer than that.

Reported elsewhere, with rather less drama, that 1Q28 hit a trolley which was on the track, this caused damage to the train which could only be put right in situ. So the reality is that the train was damaged around midday on a Sunday when the minimum number of staff are on duty, parts have to be taken to the place where the damage took place, staff have to get to the place where the damage took place to carry out the repairs or replace the damaged parts, hardly what I'd term an 'abandonment', a 'schoolboy story of the 70s' or 'a disgrace', but I guess we all have our own views

The term abandoned was used on the internal Tyrell system, I'm aware of what happened and the reasons, but it is a sad indictment of the fragmentation of the industry that fitters couldn't be called upon from a more local location, Brotherton is hardly the middle of nowhere.

It's a non-passenger service on a lightly used stretch of line. It disrupted one return passenger working which was covered by a RRB that was advertised 12 hours before the service was due to run. Single line working was also implemented.

I'm aware of what happened and the reasons, but it is a sad indictment of the fragmentation of the industry that fitters couldn't be called upon from a more local location, Brotherton is hardly the middle of nowhere.

It's not exactly sat down in a crucial location though. You can bet that if it had failed somewhere more important that it would have been shifted much faster.

I'm usually the first to complain at the way railways handle problems. But this doesn't sound unreasonable to me. If it had been a fully laden pendalino and they wouldn't let passengers off it and the whole WCML was shut down till it was sorted, then it wouldn't be a reasonable response! But different things need different answers & an empty train only causing one cancellation (with notice and an RRB) doesn't seem too bad at all.
