Just back home from shift. Back in covering for ill delivery driver this evening - out into the wilds of the Peak District for just six drops in 3 hours. Big orders though.

Checked our substitution % when I got in this morning, and currently running at 2.9% for past 7 days - not bad at less than 3 items per 100. However, target is 2.5% :(

Thats still bloody good though and fair play for going back in the night too!! Wrap up warm gonna be cold

There's sadly a difference between the "normal" Co-Op and the Lincolnshire Co-Op who have some very strange ideas when it comes to pricing and stocking their stores. There are price differentials in stores only a couple of miles apart, and the one in my village is nearly always the most expensive - presumably because it is the only store in the village.

The Co-Op also own a lot of land and buildings in the local area, and have done everything in their power to get the council to agree to schemes to drive out local businesses. They're a very un-cooperative co-operative!

Sounds like a retirement home for X Tesco management and board members. I now understand why your just a tad hacked off!↲

Aldi now for 90% of my stuff - saving a fortune over Ocado. Great that they now take my TESCO credit card and I get those points.

Use Asda £1 deliveries for buying fizzy pop, pasta and some other goods in bulk when on offer about once every two months.

Waitrose in person when I need truffle flavored peacock droppings for a Heston Blumenthal recipe.

My missus gets the discounted stuff on their sell by date. Waitrose are by far the best for this

I know a lot of train crew at Nottingham who trawl round Morrisons and Tesco Express near the station late at night picking up bargains from the reduced stock. Mainly the "poor" drivers ;)

I can assure you that the software we use will not allow short dated items to be selected

I think we're talking about a different service? I'm talking about where there are staff going round the stores with giant trollies containing something like 8 home delivery boxes and they're selecting things manually off a list which they load into the said home delivery boxes.

I've seen them looking at two or three of the same item before putting one only in the box; usually the shortest dated one or the least attractive looking one.

I have noticed how they always take the first item from the shelf as they haven't time to delve towards the back like me. If they did they would take twice as long, that's why I would never use home delivery.

I don't find a problem with items that are almost going out of date when using online shopping. I've also not experienced the 'unattractive item' problem that Peter mentioned.

I just ring Tesco and point out that I've down a week's shopping so don't expect everything to expire in 3 days and usually get the cost refunded (and get to keep it!). Hasn't been such a problem since we started getting deliveries from the Enfield mega warehouse but when it was delivered from the Lea Valley superstore we just knew that it was some spiteful picker doing it on purpose because we'd complained before.

Had a similar experience with Sainsbury's a couple of Christmases back. Almost all the short life stuff expired on or before Boxing Day. Rang them up and gave them a rollicking, the store manager called personally about half an hour later and refunded the whole lot. About £180! A very Merry Christmas.

I'm quite tempted to give this strategy a try this Christmas!

Pickers have a hand held device that will not allow short dated items to be scanned and selected for home delivery or click n collect customer orders.

You are welcome to come and accompany one of my pickers at my store to see the evidence first hand if you are still unconvinced

Picker will not know ID of customer - merely order number for that store on that day. Sorry to rebut the conspiracy theory.

Just out of interest - what is the short date threshold ?

Varies from product to product.

Pre-packed salad and items containing fresh cream are probably the shortest - i'm pretty sure that these must have two clear days as a MINIMiUM to be accepted for the Dot.Com service.

Fair enough, thanks ;)

We use Tesco Online every week, generally very impressed with the service, it's rare to have mistakes, once every six months maybe, on the odd occasion that a delivery is late, we get a call to reconfirm delivery time, short dated or alternatives items are delivered in separate bags, clearly pointed out on delivery - perhaps once a month

Completely recommend the service

Cheers. :)

In work at 06.00 in morning rather than usual 07.00 Sunday start as the relentless upsurge in pre-Christmas activity is already underway.

The volume of alcohol that is sold over then next six weeks is staggering.

Interesting seeing Lidl and Aldi mentioned; I'm a Lidl fan (like the store layout, easy to wander around and find stuff) and I just find my local Tesco, which happens to be a megastore about twice the size of Heathrow :( impossible to shop in, there's just too much covering too great an area. One big plus Tesco and Lidle do have over my nearest supermarket, Morrisons, is that neither of them play tinned/canned music over the speakers all day.

I've even suggested to Morrisons that they turn it off for a couple of hours/day (or even just play birdsong/crashing waves if they really want noise) and I'll go back, but they're having none of it, although they did send me a £3 voucher as compensation.

Morrisons - dash in for a £1 loaf of bread and hope the horrible song i heard doesn't stay in my head all day. I'm sure mental torture covers it....

Talking about a few years ago now. So if not conspiracy it must have been incompetence, which was our second theory. The whole store was useless, vans breaking down or drivers regularly not turning up or claiming we were out or driving off with half the order on the van and denying any knowledge. A few times we had to drive to a broken down van or the store and collect our order otherwise we would have had to wait days for a reschedule. About 6 or 7 years ago, after a long sequence of such incidents, I suggested to Tesco that they allow customers to order on-line and then just drive to the store to pick their order up - and click and collect was eventually born. They should be paying me royalties for each order :D

Interesting you mention that - home delivery barely exists in France, however 'le Drive' (ie. you go and pick up your shopping from the warehouse, all packed for you) is most certainly the big thing. It originally started out with pickers going into supermarkets and 'picking' among regular customers, but later builds, because of a french planning quirk, are warehouses which allow for lower costs - no customers to get in the way, less/no furnishings, can place products in the most efficient places etc.

The population density of France probably doesn't lend itself to home delivery outside of metropolitan areas, hence why they have gone more with the 'we pick it, you come and pick it up' approach.

On Tesco's website it says the minimum shelf life for each fresh item. If its not got that much date I've found they'll refund without question

Asda is useless. I've used Asda 4-5 times only because they kept putting e-vouchers to compensate their incompetence. Each time they blamed the driver as whole bags of shopping weren't delivered, but were not scanned. In my opinion something was going on that shouldn't have been, as it was the same driver each time, I wondered if they were watching him as they blamed the driver without much thought when I mentioned the number of missing items.
