oh thats bad!!!!!! But i thought doors had automatic sensors that would only close if nothing obstructed them precisely to prevent something like this happening. Im also suprised no one saw it before the train was allowed to depart......if it was me trapped i think all id do is just scream for help and hope it wasnt a fast train!

Not all trains have sensors. Units like the 313s, 317s & 321s the doors operate using air and will not gain interlock until they are fully closed as has been mentioned the doors only need to be open about an inch and interlock will fail. The doors on these older units ( unless they have been modded) cannot tell by movement of objects, they only react if forced open or obstructed. Once obstructed the doors often slam closed (due to air force).

The units that have sensors are much the very modern trains like the ones i work on 172s & 378s. Also in this category will be the Siemens units on GER, TPE & SWT and the Bombardier units the likes of which Southern, South Eastern and London Overground use. That is because the doors are operated electrically, the sensors monitor the movement of anything that goes past it. That is why if you see when someone tries to board after the close door has been activatied the doors actually stop for a couple seconds (normally enough for the obstruction to move), if the obstruction is still there it will try to close again and will do this four times if after the fourth time the doors are obstructed the doors fully release and stay open until a member of staff deals with it. On one occasions during last summer a group of idiots did this and we could not get the doors closed at all, we eventually TISed it and had to detrain everyone and go empty with the doors open.

Sorry if i have waffled on a bit.

If his ankle was trapped, I would think that even before the report is completed - we'd suddenly be hearing about an entire class of train being whipped out of service for emergency checks.

Seriously, could such a train continue in service with the ability to allow the doors to lock with an ankle trapped in it?

That makes me guess (and it IS a guess) that the people who need to know already know it wasn't an ankle!

They do...

I'm surprised that so many people doubt the professionalism of the Driver and the Fleet maintenance staff so quickly.

I'm not surprised. Why take responsibility for your actions when you can bleat on about your "rights". Then blame someone else!
