Check-in suspended at £4.3bn T5

BBC News: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7317352.stm

All luggage check-in has been suspended at Heathrow's new £4.3bn Terminal 5, after cancelled flights and baggage delays blighted its opening day.

British Airways, which has sole use of the terminal, cancelled 34 flights due to "teething problems" and was later forced to stop luggage check-in.

Technical difficulties have also led to baggage delays of up to four hours.

BA blamed the glitches on problems with "staff familiarisation", which had a knock-on effect on bags and flights.

The computer cannot cope with the number of bags going through
Baggage worker

In a day of problems at the new terminal, airport operator BAA said a baggage belt had stopped working, meaning a halt to check-in for passengers with bags.

One baggage worker told the BBC the situation was "mayhem" and that the technical problems had been known about for some time.

"They have been doing tests on the belt system for the last few weeks and knew it wasn't going right. The computer cannot cope with the number of bags going through."

Staff screening

A BA spokeswoman said delays in getting staff screened for work and other technical difficulties had caused the airline problems at the start of the day and continued to have a knock-on effect.

The company warned more flights could be cancelled as a result of the latest glitch.

Cancelled services in and out of the terminal so far have included flights to Munich, Frankfurt, Paris and Brussels as well as Glasgow and Aberdeen.

Passengers departing from and arriving at the new terminal have also suffered delays retrieving their bags.

Some waited two hours for luggage from a Frankfurt flight that landed at around 0830 GMT.

And in Paris, BBC reporter Peter Grant said no bags had made it on to his morning flight from Heathrow.

Airport operator BAA, which operates the baggage distribution system at T5, said a total of seven flights had left the terminal without luggage on board due to a system fault.

Danish businessman Henrik Moeller, who travelled from Hamburg and landed at T5 at 0745 GMT, said he was not reunited with his bags until 0900 GMT.

"I have read about this new bag system and how it was supposed to be so much better. It's obvious there have been teething problems."

Anja Kaut, arriving from Munich with her husband Matthew and 10-year-old daughter, Charlotte, also had to wait about an hour for their luggage.

"We were told there was a technical defect," said Mrs Kaut.

System fault

But those departing also suffered problems.

Heather Stevens's partner Neil Stonebridge was due to take off from T5 for Los Angeles at 1005 GMT. Almost three hours later the plane was still waiting for passengers' baggage to be loaded.

Heathrow upheaval

Heather, 36, told the BBC: "Apparently the computer software told the baggage people that the flight had taken off.

"So everyone in the plane just watched as all their suitcases were taken back into the terminal instead of being loaded on."

There were also complaints from passengers about confusing road signs, problems when paying at a car park, and broken down escalator.

One passenger in a wheelchair was stuck on a flight arriving into T5 from Glasgow for more than an hour - and then when he was transported to the terminal he realised he could not get up the kerb.

"I couldn't even get into the building without getting up a step," Matt Duffy told the BBC.

"It is totally unbelievable as far as I am concerned."

MP Alistair Carmichael has demanded an apology on behalf of all travellers affected by the T5 difficulties, blaming the airline's "inadequate operation" for the problems.

In a statement, BA said it had experienced "initial teething problems" first thing in the morning, which had caused delays in staff arriving at their posts.

Difficulties included car parking provision, delays in staff security screening and staff familiarisation and "some baggage performance issues", it said.

Protesters at Heathrow Terminal 5
Environmental campaigners in red T-shirts staged a peaceful protest

"These delays have had a knock-on effect during the day so we have taken the decision to cancel a very small number of flights. We would like to apologise to passengers for any disruption to their flights," the statement added.

Earlier the company said such problems were "not unexpected following one of the most complex and largest airport moves in history".

Aviation analyst Jamie Bowden told the BBC such difficulties were to be expected on the opening of a terminal, with new airports in Japan and Hong Kong also suffering difficulties in their first days.

What was important was that BA and airport operator BAA worked together to solve the technical problems "quickly" to ensure the minimum disruption for passengers, he added.

Earlier, anti-airport expansion groups held a protest at the new terminal.

Hundreds of protesters - wearing Stop Airport Expansion T-shirts and opposed to plans for a third runway and sixth terminal at Heathrow - carried out a peaceful protest.

Hmmm...

Check-in delays also meant that Ray Duffy, who was trying to return home on a flight to Edinburgh, was turned away from security because he was too late for his flight. But after returning to the departure hall, he discovered he could no longer fly with his luggage.

"I just hope I get home. It's incredible. I've stood in line for an hour, I get to the front of the line and they just send me to the back of another line," he said.
Now let's do some quick maths here...

London - Edinburgh (Air)
Central London to Heathrow: 15 mins on the Heathrow Excess,
Minimum advance check-in time at Heathrow: 90 mins,
Flight duration: About 60 minutes including taxiing and other ground operations,
Wait at baggage reclaim: A good 30 minutes usually,
Bus to Lothian Road (Just above Waverly): About 25 mins.
Total journey time by air: Three hours and fourty minutes (Not incl. delays).

London - Edinburgh (Rail)
Kings Cross - Edinburgh Waverly (Norm): 4 hours 20 mins on the NR site? That's gotta be an error, surely?:roll:<(
Kings Cross - Edinburgh Waverly (With a driver who knows what he's doing): 2 hours or so. :)
Kings Cross - Edinburgh Waverly (A 370 APT-P rake with two power cars and me driving!): 30 minutes flat! <D (Non-stop timing)
Total journey time by rail should be: Two hours exactly (Including some late running allowance).

Although I can appreciate why people use air travel for going overseas (Even I do that!) I'd really like to know why people use air travel for internal journeys, especially as nine times out of ten city-centre to city-centre travel usually works out faster by rail anyway! Does no-one care for the environment nowadays or something?:sad::cry:

Oh...And I always had Kings Cross - Edinburgh down as about 2-2.5 hours duration on a semi-fast IC-225. Have I got my timings wrong, or are NR now routing them all via Leicester, Manchester and Newcastle in that order?
(There's no way it would take four hours on an APT-P, and the IC-225 is a progression of that design!:roll:)

Definite wrong timings there Death.
For example, it is around 2h 20m Kings Cross to Darlington and that is with only a stop at York!

I thought some European flights from Heathrow has moved to Gatwick

Kestrel, go to Zurich Airport, its so massive (and efficent- well almost if you have planes going to all London Airports at the same time queing for the runway!)

Ta for the Gen,

Thanks God that Warsaw moved to Gatwick and soon City, I hate flying from Heathrow every year, it stinks like sweatshops and thanks god i ain't flying from T5!

T5 isn't a bad terminal at all. In-fact, its probably one of the best in the country! However, BA are bad, and that is the only reason T5 is a failure.

Everything is working fine, its just the BA staff stupidly haven't been trained on how to use the new features! :|

I wouldn't pin the blame just on BA. The problem is the Automated Baggage System that reads tags and distributes luggage to aircraft accordingly just doesn't work. BAA (The airport owner) should of tested the system thoroughly to the maximum capacity. A very similar teething problem occurred at Hong Kongs new airport a few years ago because of glitches with the similar computer system.

BA can't process them manually fast enough because of the amount of security checks needed because of Government Regulations. The lack of staff means that they aren't checked fast enough and baggage doesn't arrive onto flights in time. One media source stated that it required 400 staff minimum to keep up with the workload.

I didn't mention BAA because I naturally assume they are crap... :P ;) (I really shouldn't talk about my employer like that!)

Seriously, I've heard better things from passengers over the last few days, although its still bad. Give it a few weeks and, providing we have no more snow, I think things will be running a lot smoother *fingers crossed*. :)
