On the Marston Vale line west of St Johns, the points were only set in one direction (where one line becomes two). They never moved for years. Probably still haven't. If the train leaves Bedford St Johns going to Bletchley it automatically takes the left lane. If a train comes from the opposite direction and it has a green light, it just runs through the points. I often wondered if these points were built mechanically for this purpose. BR obviously knew that no such train would ever take the right lane which would effectively be going in the wrong direction on the wrong track.
