Tender Couplings

Hi folks

Apologies for this rather random query, but I was just wondering if anyone could advise of how the semi-permanent couplings, between engine and tender, on steam locomotives function.

There's this video on YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_mUniyC23k - but it doesn't give much away.

When I've seen locomotives without-tender, the coupling appears to be a simple bar with a hole in, presumably to drop a pin through. However, the video would suggest that the coupling process is a bit more complicated.

With the A4 tender shown in the video you have the main pin/ draw bar the keeps the tender and engine together. This runs through the rubbing plate and has a hole at each end that you drop a pin through to couple engine and tender together. You then have 2 emergency bars either side that couple to engine and tender with pins as well. That's it coupling wise. You then just have the water/ steam heat and brake connections.
