Tempory contract

After some advice. I am currently 5th in the pool for a position as station staff.
I have today been offered a 6 month tempory while someone is on maternity leave.
Obviously I am very keen to work for the TOC but I am unsure about being potentially unemployed after 6 months with bills to pay .
Here's the response I got....


"After the 6 months, it is highly likely that a position would become available that we would offer you permanently, however we wouldn’t be able to 100% guarantee this .



If you wouldn’t like to go for it don’t worry that’s understandable, and we will keep you on file for future vacancies that come up. If you would like to be considered, let me know and I will progress you to the medical stage.

I currently have a full time job, though not the best it is a regular steady pay.

Sounds like a very personal decision which would differ for each person. I would personally go for it and give the job my all. By the end of the six months you would hope to have proved yourself indispensable to them because you work harder than anyone else.

I had this when I joined Royal Mail, they offered me a 3 month contract and I ended up staying 6 years.

Chances are they are getting to see what you work like, and this is an escape clause if you don't meet the required standard.

Go for it mate it's a big foot in the door.

That's true. Its a huge gamble, even if I do well I could still go in the pool which concerns me especially with mortgages and credit cards and running into financial difficulty

Your probation would be 6 months anyway so I would go for it. Otherwise I would expect to be sat in that pool for a long time.

I would suspect if you don't go for this opportunity you would never hear from them again. If you prove your worth over the 6 months you will in my opinion get a permanent one.

Once you get a start that's the hard bit done. Six years ago Network Rail wanted someone until they closed the crossing anywhere from 3 months so only 3 month contract 6 months later still there so given full time contract 6 years later still here signalling

Your concerns are completely justified and understandable but will you be kicking yourself if you don't take this opportunity? I think you might.

Nothing in life is certain (apart from death and taxes of course) so go for the job and make them want to take to you on permanently!
