Yapton is a good example can't remember if both ways but over the crossing there by that derelict house... just approaching Barnham
people get up by mistake prematurely
been a TSR there for as long as I can remember

Must be a good reason and sorry if been explained

Any more long term temporary speed restrictions?

It's there to reduce the risk of a collision at the level crossing, as it is routinely misused / abused by motorists. It stays on until the LX is converted to MCB-OD.

In that case shouldn't it be made a Permanant Speed Restriction rather than a TSR?

The South Western used to have two pretty prominent TSR restrictions that wouldn't go away - The bridge over the River Avon down in Christchurch had one for many years which remained as a TSR, just renewed every few weeks. While the somewhat notorious diamond crossing at Basingstoke, re-laid at great expense back in 2007 has also nearly always had a TSR slapped on it. It was down to 15 last month for trains coming down from the Reading direction, it's now down to 10.

Much of it depends on the TOC's and FOC';s to challenge - some are lost in the mists of time ....e.g on the Pembroke Dock branch.

I disagree. A PSR would be much harder to replace. We had a TSR at Stowmarket for 25yrs & the second the silly foot crossing was closed permanently the line speed went from 60 to 100 overnight. I dread to think how long that would've taken otherwise. It's bad enough trying to get an EMU PSR altered to MU.

IIRC the 20 'temporary' through Preston on the Slows has been on for something like 25 years?

The 20 at Farnham since the bank collapse is there indefinitely, and there was a 20 at Barnes for about three years. A footpath crossing related 25 has gone down at Staines recently, I dread to think how long it'll last...

There's one north of Muir of Ord station which has been there for years.

There's one to the west of Partick that feels like it's been there for years; 10/40 (40 PSR) over one of the old bridges (maybe the one over the end of Sandyford St?).

The 20 itself has been in force for around 10 years having previously been 30/35 since dinosaurs roamed the earth.

One at portcreek has been there for at least 5 months. It's not quite in the same scale as 5 years, but it's long enough. The up fast through Basingstoke over the previous mentioned junction is 50 instead of whatever it should be.

There is no such mechanism as a PSR these days, as all speeds are signed and we don't have a "linespeed" in the SA any more. As The Planner says, to make a TSR permanent requires a change to the SA, network change and (theoretically) a risk assessment (as you will probably introduce massive signal overbraking, unless the TSR was to deal with underbraking ...) not that the RA seems to be common practice.

Exactly the same procedure would be required to remover the PSR, but would be far more painful as the RA would have to cover every discipline in detail.

The only downside of long-standing TSRs is putting the signs back up after vandalism and the dent it makes in the engineering allowances.

My vote for long-standing TSR is the 25 over Castlefield Junction, 20 years and counting but only about 100m long.

Cricklewood South Junction on the Up Fast has been 50 for passenger trains for a long time.

Sevenoakes tunnel has a long standing 50mph TSR which I believe has been in place for several years.

It's due to the poor state of the tunnel's interior so I imagine it will remain in place until until NR get round to repairing it.

There is a temporary restriction at the end of platform 1 at staines since before Christmas, not sure what it relates too but seems a long time for a temporary restriction

It needs some big blocks to do it....

Any idea what the plan is to repair it?

I know Strood tunnel was shut for a couple of years to be relined. I can't see them doing that with Sevenoakes tunnel somehow.

Strood (and Higham) tunnels were shut for a few months rather than years. (I was fortunate enough to have a visit at the end of the works).

I don't know the latest plan for Sevenoaks unfortunately. But as you say, it is unlikely to be a several month shut down.

It should be 90 but it has hardly ever been that. It's problems to do with the diamond crossings behaving badly and the short rail lengths creating track alignment distortion.

There is a potential proposed solution in development so hopefully in 6 months or so the TSR will disappear, but it's not certain yet.

The longer term solution will the the flyover or the North (of the station) bypass lines, both of which have been ideas for years but never really turned into anything like a proper funded proposal. One day maybe! :)

When the Higham and Strood tunnels were in a bad way, was the speed restriction technically temporary for the years it was there, before it's 2004 reinforcement to raise the speed from 20 to 70mph?

Fun and games with TPE and the new time table with that one!

Stays at 25mph as part of Ordsall Chord anyway doesn't it? Would have been factored into any timetable if so.
