Teesside/Durham Coast Line Resignalling

Hi all,

I found myself on a train from Darlington to Middlesbrough yesterday evening and saw evidence of the recent (2021) resignalling works between Thornaby & Middlesbrough.
I couldn't help but notice that some of the works still remain outstanding, with some equipment/cabinet bases having nothing on, and other bits of equipment having black bags over them (lineside phones etc).

When the works were happening, was there future-proofing for a subsequent phase? Are further works even planned?

I know nothing about that specific scheme so I can't tell you. However, it wouldn't be unusual to have spare bases for a number of reasons.
  • The civil engineering works will run a long way ahead of signalling equipment installation and perhaps ahead of detailed design. It could be based on an estimate of the number of locs. If you aren't sure, a few additional square yards of concrete when the contractor is already there is not going to add a lot to the cost. Getting the contractor into a another possession to lay another base will, and it could also delay other work pushing up cost further.
  • There could be provision for a later stage that has yet to be commissioned as you suggest. With money as it is these days, that work might have been deferred, or it just isn't scheduled yet. It might even be for a telecom or E&P scheme to provide upgraded comms/power which will happen later.
  • There may have been an extra new case at the site to interface to old signalling. Now that more new signalling has been commissioned there may be no need for that fringe case and it has been removed.
