I read a report recently of proposals for turning Tees yard into a housing estate. It got me thinking of the many redundant yards and depots littering the country and of any proposals out there to convert them for rail or non-rail use. The new policy seems to be on using rail land if possible for rail connected warehousing etc - Tinsley, Telford and also the development at Daventry spring to mind (although Daventry was mainly a green field development). It seems a good idea to use old railway land to try and generate new rail traffic. I know most land when sold is used for non-railway purposes such as Whitemoor yard which became a prison and Bath rd depot in Bristol which is to be a Leisure Centre or Supermarket or some such.It makes sense to try and use spare railway land to help secure the future of the railway by linking its use to the railway next door. if anyone knows of any proposal for redeveloping spare railway land or for any more Telford/Tinsley developments please advise

This is not exactly Tinsley Yard or Teeside and it most definitely not railway land re-development....its worse!
This is prime green-belt land that is also good quality farmland and a very fine natural habitat! Its too good to lose for ever!!

There is scope to build similar at Harworth on a brown-field site, now that Harworth Glass Bulbs has been flattened and an even greater colliery site (some 300 acre) at Thurcroft. Both are served with the same railway (SYJR) and both are near M-ways (Harworth A1M and Thurcroft M1).
I agree that once the railway land has been lost, it is lost for ever and will never be usefully replaced. The same goes for green-belt, once lost, its lost for ever. The best that could happen is it resorts to brown-field status after some 90-100 years!
Tinsley could so easily become an inland rail-port with some vision but I believe Sheffield City Council would find some totally loony idea or reason to prevent such a plan!!
Its perfect in all ways but the NIMBY's would find ways and mobilize public opinion as usual.
