Technical Question re 444/450

In 2012, class 444/450 units were fitted with regenerative braking. I believe this was the time where their acceleration was reduced so less power was taken from the third rail, which resulted in them sounding different. Does anyone know if, before the regen brakes were fitted, the units used rheostatic braking (where the traction motors are "reversed" to slow the train down), or solely air brakes?
