My old laptop which did everything fine has sadly died, I am now using one a girl in work gave me for free which was jolly decent of her. It is a relatively old machine, a Toshiba, but there is something odd about it. The default web browser is Safari, the one you get on Apple machines and it just won't let me access loads of stuff on the internet. By won't access I mean the format just doesn't work with Youtube, Facebook and loads of other stuff. I tried installing Firefox, it installed fine but when the home page comes up if I type anything in it tells me it is not a secure website. Any suggestions? I am not the most tech savvy but I am able to work things out with a bit of support. It clearly works fine with RailUk but I can't read newspaper websites, watch things on Youtube or even view photos on here depending on what people have shared them on.

When you say old - how old are we talking? If it is old enough then it is possible it doesn't support the newer versions of Firefox etc. That means that newer standards may not be supporting, which would explain the "not a secure website" message you are seeing. What version of firefox do you have? (and giving Chrome a try like Trd suggests isn't a bad idea either).
Could it have a firewall set up to block non secure sites (perhaps a third party one that was installed and is well out of date or unsupported now?), or have a weird proxy server setting causing security alerts? That said, YouTube and the like would be secure websites (https) as is this forum, so I am a little confused.
Did you just start using the machine as is? Maybe (depending on the OS - ideally it has been upgraded to Windows 10) a reset to factory default and setting up afresh with Chrome would be a good idea - albeit with the need to waste an evening/weekend...!
Cheers mate, it is about six years old if not newer. I tried installing the latest version of Firefox. The weird thing is I just started using it in lieu of a 10 years plus old Dell laptop which had a very recent version of Firefox on it. Thanks for the advice, I will keep tinkering.
I think the girl who passed it to me just wiped everything personal off it, I started using it as is. Like I say the browser being Safari did kind of surprise me. I may try a reset like you mentioned. It is all very off, this site looks pretty much like it does on my phone or I Pad but if I try and go on Facebook, Youtube or any number of newspaper websites I just get almost unreadable text on the screen.
Any chance of taking a screenshot and uploading it here?
It is Windows, probably sounds a daft question but how do I check which version it is? Like I say I'm not very tech savvy. Ha ha.
Go to system by pressing the windows key and the pause/break key together.
it will bring up a window similar to the picture I've attached to this post.
Use the upload a file option to attach it to the post. Paint can be sued to past the screen shot into so it can be saved and therefor attached.
That probably explains it, if memory serves right Vista doesn't support TLS 1.2. You definitely need to make sure you are in the latest service pack.

Apple did maintain a version of Safari for Windows for a few years. But it’s completely obsolete now. It’s also pretty much essential that you upgrade to 7 or 10 if you want to stick with Windows.

That said, any PC that can run Vista should be able to run Windows 7.
