That line is dud for 56 haulage as well as 60 haulage (not all the way along on a 60 but close enough lol) ;)

One day we'll meet up properly! I need to get up there and clear out a megaton of shacks and a fair few trams yet. Mind you, I need to do a South Yorkshire Travelmaster more...

I'm sure Mr Pedantic above would be up for that, Tech!!

25/02 - That Mersey bash I can't think of a name for

I must admit, this was rather successful, although it didn't seem it at first as I landed myself on tram 123 into the city centre on the 0855 Malin Bridge, changing at the station after purchasing some tickets and drinks onto the 0940 Liverpool, today formed of duds 158865/158813. These were extremely busy, however after fighting my way on I managed to get a seat in 813 without too much hassle. Whilst this was a Liverpool train and that was my ultimate destination, I was only taking these to Manchester, as the EMT services go the wrong way

Connecting at Manchester meant that there was a Preston before my Bangor train, and sure enough, 156429/156420 rolled in on the Preston, so it seemed rude to not take these across to Oxford Road, and pick up the ATW from there! Sadly, dud 175116 was taking me through to Newton le Willows, to meet my mate who was kindly waiting for me there with my Saveaway.

To say that I only won this shack about four weeks ago, I've now been there three times in that period, which I think is only slightly insane! Dud 319364 was next up, through to St Helens Junction, where yet another change left us with dud 319365 across to Huyton.

Here, a bus happened to Halewood, and not realising how long it took or that we'd not connect onto a train, another bus then over to Hunts Cross, left us with dud 507007 on the 1321 to Southport, as far as Moorfields. I was trying to have a clearout of the 50xs, and so we decided that it would be logical to do so whilst having a clearout of shacks too - these not being dud for my mate, but none the less...

Winner 507004 rolled in on the Ormskirk - excellent! - this taking us through to Shack 1, Town Green, where a quick connection onto dud 508108 the short distance back to Maghull. An even quicker connection here onto dud 508139 to shacks 3 and 4, up to Aughton Park and then back down to Walton 15 minutes later.

At Walton, the short walk over to shack 5, Rice Lane was taken, from where my luck began to change with units, as winner 508143 took us back through to Moorfields.

Of course, now another bus had to happen, which was taken through to Shack 6 of Birkenhead North, where after getting some food from the nearby Asda, double duds 508136/508137 took us forwards to shack 7, Manor Road. The name should really have given this away, living close to our Manor, and that being a dump, the station was, well, a dump

Double winners 507024/508115 were taken up to Leasowe (shack 8), before being at a loss and taking double winners 507019/508110 back through to West Kirby.

Bussing it back into Birkenhead to get across to Central quicker than the combined efforts of the train and rail replacement, I'd hatched a plan to clear a couple of the Chester line shacks closest to Birkenhead, so took dud 508131 through to shack 9, Port Sunlight. My plan here already didn't go so well, as I missed the train back towards Birkenhead by a matter of minutes - at least this was still running every 15 minutes! I decided on a linear move to then just get one extra shack in, this would entail double winners 507020/507018 down to Bromborough Rake, and the ten minute connection now being a five minute one after some faffing with the bell codes at Port Sunlight, it was up to winner 508123 back to Birkenhead.

We met back up again here for the short rail replacement back into Liverpool, this time Lime Street, where winner 319368 was taking me back to Manchester, us saying our farewells at St Helens.

Fortunately, at Manchester, a set swap had entailed the other day, so after an ECS Pendolino arriving in on the Sheffield platform, people for the TPE boarding that, and then a platform alteration, 185130 was taking me back through the Valley of No Hope, where tram 124 would deposit me back home.

Two very basic trip reports here, both on the trams, but oh well.

I somehow managed to start the day at 10am, and this felt excessively late for me, but I wanted to test out my "new" camera lens - so I did, first by taking tram 108 forwards to Arbourthorne Road, my first shot. This went okay, so then I moved forwards into the city centre on tram 121, through to Castle Square, where after a quick trip to Poundland, it was over to Nunnery depot for even more photos, the traction for this being tram 120.

More photos done, and a late running tram 104 was next to take me to Arena - at this point, the yellow step-up tram had been brought out - seems this is now the rule, rather than the exception to the rule - oh well. Tram 120 then took us forwards to Meadowhall, where not a lot else had happened with the tram-train extension as we passed Tinsley. Tram 125 dramatically returned us into the city centre, where after yet another trip to Poundland, and this time also to Greggs, it was to one of my favourite photo spots on the network, on 117 to Birley Lane, with a quick walk up to Birley Wood foot crossing.

This didn't go too well, as 117 was the last tram through the city centre before a passenger was taken ill at Fitzalan Square, so a bit later the trams started flowing again, and 106 took us to Hackenthorpe, and 124 then to Donets'k Way.

This is where the fun started - Supertram had devised a cunning yet stupid idea to get trams running by removing trams from service and doing double step ups. Eventually it worked, although I'm no longer too sure if I have any brain cells left, but once things started to die down, tram 112 went forwards to Halfway, where 119 returned us to the city centre, for yet another Poundland visit.

After this visit, it was to Herdings and back, with tram 121 providing the power, before changing at Castle Square to take me back through to Meadowhall - the football traffic had gone back to messing trams up, so an exceptionally late tram 115 took me forwards to Meadowhall, where the tram was parked up ready to do an unnecessary step up to return 125 to depot early, suffering from a WSP fault where it would sand the moment a brake application is made - all makes for a fun day, I suppose!

Similarly broken tram 123 took me the full length of the route forwards to Middlewood, for the first time this year, and then back to Hillsborough, where after an unusually lengthy wait I boarded tram 107 to take me across the city and back home.

06/03

I'd been tipped off that the testing of 399s during the daytime started today - and they indeed tried, although I'm sure 399205 tried and failed to make it out of the depot, as it had somehow migrated its way inside the shed, which seemingly now only happens when one fails

Tram 104 started the day today, moving me forwards to Fitzalan Square, where a connection was made onto tram 120 to Nunnery, to check on the 399s to no avail - damn. The front destination of this tram had killed itself again, so after making sure the crew were aware, and subsequently running around with a purple board in the window, it was back to city on 102, and then across to the station on 121. After this, 107 was taken forwards to Castle Square, for 112 to Nunnery, and after a quick walk to Woodbourn Road, it was down to 119 forwards to Meadowhall.

Wow - a lot of work has happened since! There is no longer a fence blocking Tinsley chord off on the Supertram side - looks like we're getting close to a possession to install the junction! A quick drop back, and tram 106 took us through to Middlewood, and back to Hillsborough. On this trip, Tramway Zero radioed through - once again the points had failed at Gleadless Townend, however this time it was much worse than Saturday, and this marked the end of service to Herdings for the rest of the day, this instead being provided by some Stagecoach Enviro cackpile.

At this point, I had to shoot off for a pointless 90 minutes at college, and 116 had the honours of this, and not long after 122 deposited me back in the city centre. From here, I took 109 through to Granville Road on an additional Cathedral to Halfway service, where 122 was then taken to Crystal Peaks.

Almost a round trip on 118 then finished the day, with this being taken to Halfway, then Malin Bridge, then back home. A good day, just a shame the 399s never saw the network today!

Ah goodie :)

I'm in Sheffield on Easter Saturday to try and hunt down my remaining pair of trams, knowing my luck the 399s will enter service a couple days afterwards!

May apparently.
Word of warning though, we're expecting that Meadowhall will be shut that day to install the new junction onto the Tinsley chord. 101s also currently unmovabely dead if you need that one.
Trust you choosing the day I'm in London though!

Very nice.
I must admit, I'm looking forward to trying out a 399 :)

You wouldn't be the only one!

111 & 118 are my last two to hunt down, most likely a fester in the city centre area on the look out with maybe a long run somewhere if both turn out :)

Should be easy enough to do. 118 runs on the old destination codes still so never tracks on the world's most reliable boards so keep an eye out on there for that one. 111 is pretty damn easy to spot!

Just got the one for this year outstanding, 101 typically.

11/03 - How to waste a Cheshire Day Ranger MK2

Now you're probably wondering why this is MK2, this is MK1.

The day started off with tram 115 providing the honours into the city centre, which was another uneventful journey as always on these Saturday morning trams, where after becoming £21.85 lighter, it was over to the trains. The morning's traction on 1B69 wasn't identified until I remembered I forgot to check upon arrival at Sheffield, although this was confirmed as mega miler 185105 when we arrived at Stockport after a pretty damn good run. For a full service too, we managed not to lose any time at Sheffield and even arrived into Stockport a whole ten seconds early - how about that!!

I made my way over to platform 2, before realising that my train shouldn't be the 1004 London, and crossed over to platform 1, which looked more like it. For some daft reason I was wasting the morning using the Buxton line, although I blame that on the fact that I forgot that the Buxton line was even valid on a Cheshire Day Ranger until checking it last night. Dud 150133 led winner 150225 into Stockport working this, and I was so surprised I even fell onto the rear 150. Oops!

This combination was taken forwards to Whaley Bridge, where I was hoping that I'd be getting lucky today and hopefully I'd win another Northern 150 on this run, although sadly that was not to be the case. Duds 150228/150206 returned me to Stockport, where dud 323233 then took me to the second shack of the day, Wilmslow. I wanted to get to Shotton, but decided just to break the journey up a couple of times, in the hope of getting some winners, which seemed not to want to fall for me today as dud 175116 took me forwards to Crewe.

Fortunately, the Crewe to Chester shuttle is always a good unit for me, mainly because I'd only had two ATW 150s, and sure enough winner 150229 fell to take me forwards to Chester, where dud 175001 then took me through to Shotton. Somehow the connections here had fell nicely, and so I went to source some food on the high street, two boxes of biscuits from Heron Foods, followed by a very warm Chicken Pasty from Sayers. Shotton seemed like a nice place, if you discount the very chavvy council estate style street from the station to the high street...and the station itself...and the field behind the station...I was rather glad when dud 175106 pulled in to take me forwards to the next shack of Runcorn East. Here I discovered that my portable charger was now next to useless. We'd stopped for about ten minutes in a tunnel just outside Chester after tripping an overspeed sensor, which helped take the 20 minuteish connection down to a more bearable level for the location which I was in, before yet another dud, this time 175002 arrived to take me down to Chester.

I'd formulated a plan before taking my phone onto airplane mode to try and save some battery, which had a +3 cross-platform connection in it, so I decided to work towards this, to hopefully win some units and some more shacks. Winner 175107 placed me back at Crewe, where a quick walk identified I'd have dud sounding 350125 forwards to Alsager, and left me with 323225 forwards to Sandbach.

Of course, life can't be so simple, as 390128 had decided to sit down just outside of Macclesfield, and now the world was being diverted via Crewe, and so 19 minutes late, 323231 limped in to return me to Crewe, for my now minus 16 minute connection.

After reformulating a plan at Sandbach, my phone was now seriously low on battery, so I decided to head up towards Runcorn in order to do one of my least favourite units going, if anything just to get some power. Fortunately, this wasn't required as dud 350377 took me forwards to Runcorn, after persuading some kind soul to let me take a table seat so I could give my phone some much needed charge.

Also fortunately, the ex-Liverpool 350 was running a few minutes late, so I managed to make my first 350, 350248 back down to Crewe, to take dud for the day 323233 back to Stockport.

The delays still hadn't fully cleared yet, but as the thunderbird was on the front of the failed silver pile, I decided to chance it, and took dud 221126 forwards to Stoke. The TM on here tried to insist, unsuccessfully, that a Cheshire Day Ranger wasn't valid to Stoke, but a GM Wayfarer was (?????????), as we crawled our way through Poynton, Adlington, Prestbury, eventually arriving into Macclesfield 15 minutes late, to the sight of the failed 390 in the opposite platform. As I found out, we were crawling as the 57 had also seemingly failed, not being able to reach anymore than 3mph on its way down, not checking the line as the TM was insisting.

Eventually though, we arrived into Stoke 19 minutes late, which is only good when you don't have a 19 minute connection, so after speedwalking through the underpass, managed to take winner 350102 back across to Crewe, where 323223 this time would return me to Manchester.

Disaster once again occurred on this run, as I'd have a booked 38 minute connection at Manchester onto my TPE...and it's inbound 1B91 was only running 40 minutes late on departure from Scunthorpe. I probably should've done a couple of leaps to Stockport, but eventually decided against the idea, and probably should've got the all stations, but promptly decided against THAT idea when I saw it was a Merseyrail 142, so decided on wandering around Manchester just to kill time, after seeing some trams deciding that M5000s really were c*@p, and eventually just returned to the platform to watch the world go by, as 1B91 hit 49 minutes late past Chinley.

1R60 arrived in as the platform thinned off with people heading over to platform 13 for 1L19, thinned off even more as 185133 arrived in from Newcastle ready to form 1B96, the 2222 Sheffield, before eventually, 42 minutes late, 1B91 arrived in, formed today of 185104/185124, with a quick five minute turnaround to ensure no stragglers were on the rear unit which was now locked out of use (I mean, six carriages for about 30 people really is overkill!), and we left for home just 32 minutes late, however following two EMTs up the really long blocks out of Hazel Grove and up towards Disley tunnel, getting speed up across the Hope Valley until rocking up behind 5M60's approach locking onto Dore South curve. The driver on this definitely wasn't hanging around, however when we arrived into Sheffield I discovered that was largely due to the fact that the cancellation of 1B92 had meant that units were very out of place, and so rather than using 1R93 and 1R95 to work 1R94...they chose 1B94, which left Manchester at the same time 1R94 was supposed to leave Sheffield.

Eventually, it was back to the tram stop, where 115 arrived in Not in Service for no apparent reason, with not even the driver knowing what he was doing, 117 on the Herdings, with the ex-Herdings running extremely late by this point, before 118 returned me home.

All worked out in the end

Misery, Failure, Wrexham, and 1B94 not being half an hour late this week all feature below...

Tram 121. That is how the day started, and most definitely not how the day finished, although that's largely put down to the fact that it failed about mid-day! This was the 0855 service to Malin Bridge this week, and was taken to the station, remembering halfway down Park Grange Road that I'd forgotten my Rail Travel Voucher and that I no longer had enough money to pay for all my train tickets and food, so it looked like a good work out for the bank account instead!

We arrived three minutes early into Sheffield, and I watched 185113 leave on my usual 1B69 (one of my least dud 185s...) before heading to buy some tickets and purchase some drinks, before making my way to platform 8 to await the arrival of 1R62. In the process of this I stumbled across an old friend on his way to Liverpool that I'd not seen in around five years or so. We took some seats in the rear 158 until I left at Manchester, where I identified the units as 158866/158846, both sadly very dud.

156441 was the Preston, which was also shortformed, so with it being both dud and F&S, this was flagged in favour of the ATW behind, which was actually behind the train I wanted to be on from Newton le Willows, so 319365 instead took me forwards to Newton, where mega dud 175116 took me the short distance through to Earlestown to get out of the rain, where winner 319374 then took me forwards to Liverpool on the all shacks.

374s announcements seemingly hadn't been updated since they were first loaded on, and with the train being announced as the Northern Electrics service every two seconds, we arrived into Lime Street where we made our way onto the Replacement Buses.

The plan here was to head to Birkenhead North, however we'd just missed this so it was over to Birkenhead Central, and then onto the Birkenhead shuttle over to North, where duds 507007/508140 were taken across to the first winning shack of the day of Hoylake, where the 4 minute connection was taken advantage of to leap duds 508112/507017 back to Bidston, shack 2. After confusing the guy in the ticket office, and another £4.35 lighter, winner 150227 rolled in on the 1332 Wrexham. This was duly taken throughout, being winning track the moment we left Bidston, and was quite a pleasant run out, arriving into Wrexham Central on time, and only two minutes after the train was supposed to leave to head back to Bidston

Food (and cat treats ) was sourced in Wrexham, before joining winner 150259 back into England, before returning to the fourth shack, Upton. Before actually getting to Upton, we'd arrived into Bidston a whole five minutes early, and the next Merseyrail was in 20 minutes time and was also only formed of three coaches, so the bus was sourced from Upton as the alternative, straight into Liverpool city centre to save faffing around with the rail replacements when we'd done the bus stop leap to Birkenhead.

Back in Liverpool, it was to Central, where the plan immediately went out of the window as we'd just missed an Ormskirk service, so dud 507004 was taken through to Aigburth, where 507014 then returned us back a shack at St Michaels, for winner 507002 forwards to Cressington, just missing the return train which would enable us to do Brunswick without having to rush at trying to get a couple of shacks in on the Southport side.

The 15 minute wait fortunately took the advantage of using the toilet, which I'd been needing since leaving the 150 at Upton, before heading on now dud 507002 on a mega mile move up to Formby, shack 8 of the day. A quick wait here threw up winner 508138 through to Bootle New Strand, where consecutive dud 508139 then returned us the mile bus stop leap through to the tenth and final shack for the day, Seaforth and Litherland. The return from here would return us to Liverpool a whole 33 minutes before the train back to Manchester, but with Moorfields station being out of use on my first Saveaway and not enough time had been planned in to then get from Central to Lime Street. I didn't fancy the run again, combined with all the drunks, so the early finish and 33 minute connection was duly taken, which was on dud for the day 507014.

A slow walk across Liverpool later left us at Lime Street, where my train would be leaving from platform 2 - excellent, a refurbed 319! Sadly, this was not the case, as it was 319450 which looked to have been dumped there for quite some time - and 319369 was waiting on the top of 450. The doors were released at 2015, and we set off just a minute late at 2017 - not bad loading!

A rather excellent sounding 319 and a decent run through to Piccadilly, even an extended dwell at Oxford Road after arriving there quite early, and it was over to 1B94, which was today departing from platform 5 - why they can't just choose a platform and stick to it for these evening Sheffield's I'll never know!!

The late 2052 Airport rolled in just ahead of 185102 which would return me to Sheffield - fortunately this time not with an hour's overtime at the additional call of Rotherham Central

2120 came, and went, along with a very flustered guard from the late Airport. Seems as though it had been cancelled at Piccadilly to form it's return from Piccadilly, but no one had informed Mr Signaller Man and he'd routed it out - blocking us in  After a very uneventful run through to Stockport, the driver found how the power handle worked as we made our way through the Valley of No Hope (and no phone signal!), arriving into Sheffield just a few minutes behind schedule.

I made my way up to the tram to meet a very distressed woman wanting a train to Nottingham, so a quick check she's alright and pointing her into the direction of the platform, and onto the platform as 103 rolled up to take me home. The peace and quiet and fresh air didn't last long, as some scrab joined me halfway there, who stunk so badly I think he'd recently soiled himself - and to make matters worse, he decided he quite liked the look of me, barely taking his eyes off of me - don't you just love public transportation?!

Side note - I like 185s. Also, Sheffield 510 is very cool, much nice

Seems we might have someone else obsessed with MerseyRail...A productive day mind you there!

Hardly obsessed, just with needing now 20 507/508s and wanting to get them in before they go (and with how bad I am at winning units!) it just makes sense!

25/03 - Productiveness at its finest

I'm not sure how, but this year I seem to be having some really c**p luck with trains, and I'm not really sure why, but at least if it continues I'll be covered in RTVs by the end of the year  a much later start than usual was called for, and this meant that tram 124 was taken towards the station on a late (how?!) running 0915 Malin Bridge, where after spending a bit of money, it was onto dud 158901 for the run through to Leeds. Now, this isn't usually how I'd start a South Pennines, but with two lots of football fans using the Hope Valley in the exact same direction that I was requiring today at the same time, I thought it best that this be completely avoided.

I'd had gen on two 185s I wanted to root out today - mega miler 185134 and at the complete opposite end of the scale, 185122, and sadly one of these wasn't producing, but with 40 minutes until the mega miler was due at Leeds, dud 144019 was taken through to the winner shack of Woodlesford on the 1100 Knottingley, taking advantage of the 4 minute connection there. Dud 144006 was duly taken back to Leeds, where after checking a 153 for our very own Kite, it was onto platform 16 to await the ex-Hull TransPennine. This turned up, as booked, as 185134, taking this way over 700 miles. I was wanting to do this back to Leeds but thought against the idea as we were sat outside Ashburys due to "a points failure" we were 11 late by the time we moved off, and with the guard required (for what would be the first time...) somewhere on train, we arrived into Piccadilly just a few minutes after the train was supposed to be heading back to Hull. As we pulled in, I noted 185143 leaving on the ex-Cleethorpes, just 40 late. I made a note of this, as this one was required for both the year and to join the 100 mile club. Turns out 142052 had failed at Dore West Junction causing the Hope Valley to turn into a mess.

I'd decided to have a wander to see if there were any required units knocking around, and so after a half an hour fester, winner 150112 was taken through to Stockport. Here, there was a platform alteration for the Cleethorpes, as a very nice sounding 185143 came into view...on the fasts. Kicking myself, I boarded this through to Meadowhall. At this time it was just five minutes late, so I formulated a plan which may have led to a winner 150 if there was any kicking around South Yorkshire, however it appeared that this wasn't needed as we yet again ground to a halt just outside Chinley. 142049 had failed.

Twenty minutes later, we were on the move again, although extremely slowly, and somewhere around Hope, I managed to somehow fall asleep, waking up just as we were trundling into Sheffield. I checked the time, and somehow we were now 43 minutes late, and my connection at Meadowhall onto the 1421 or 1433 were now completely gone...but on the plus side, I now had very limited time for the return TPE. I decided to chance it, and fortunately we left before the stopper, eventually arriving into Meadowhall at 1458, a whole 42 minutes behind schedule - sadly, the other TPE had already arrived  The crew change at Sheffield seemed to be onto a Cleethorpes crew at the time, although judging by the fact that 1B78 eventually got cancelled at Grimsby Town 47 late, I think it was just a power happy Sheffield crew, however it did lead to this already amazing sounding 185 sounding even more amazing!

A quick connection, and it was back over to Manchester on 185103, sounding similarly amazing - although I kinda wish the connection at Meadowhall was slightly better - after all, it's not every day you see two 185s side by side there! After following the stopper through the Valley again, I hopped off at Stockport since the ATW was similarly late, in the hopes of winning a 175, whereby I also bumped into rg177. Sadly, the 175 was not a winner, and so dud 175007 took us through to Manchester, where after a quick Sainsburys call, 185131 then took both of us through to Huddersfield, for 185107 to Leeds where I bailed and left him to it.

My plan was to chance the +2 and make the return Liverpool, however we arrived a whole minute behind schedule - fortunately, so did the Liverpool, and so winner for the year 185141 was taken through to Victoria, arriving eight minutes late, where another extremely busy winner for the year, 185142 went back through to Leeds.

I now had a +3 onto 1L97 to chance, and some choice words crept into my head as we arrived into Huddersfield...4 minutes late. Fortunately, the railway gods seemed to cut me some slack at this point, as we kept to the four minute delay through West Yorkshire into Leeds, arriving at 1946. Also fortunately, 1L97 was booked to depart from 12A today rather than 17B, and 1E78 was on 12D, and I noted 158790 sat there as we arrived. I'd also noted that 1F74 was still unlocked, with the road, so there was no rush, as this was blocking 1L97s departure, so a quick walk down the platform later, and 158790 was my chariot back to Sheffield, taking a seat in luggage rack class as far as Barnsley.

And as if by magic, tram 107 deposited me home, somehow on time, just half an hour after arrival into Sheffield.
