I have been working through the usual agencies picking up bits and bobs of work. i have a UTR, the umbrella company FSTechnical sometimes take tax off and NI etc but on the whole i only do 1 shift a week. can i claim for my mileage travelled which is quite a few miles up to now. each week they pay me they send me an expenses sheet but i was under the impression that if i am "self employed" then i could just throw the mileage in t the end of the year in "bulk" if you like??? can i do this???

my umbrella says you have to claim each month, I suspect that to be able to claim the mileage once a year you'd have to have your own Personal Services Company, I used to have one and whilst it gave me a bigger take home salary it was more trouble than it was worth (HMRC aggro)

With umbrella you are paying them to do your wages so need to claim as soon as in case your not working for them later. If PAYE though agency fill in form P87 at end of tax year to claim your millage and other costs.

If your agency are taking tax and NIC from you on the payslips, you're not self employed for tax purposes - you're an employee. You'd be best getting the agency to pay you for your mileage.
