Tax discs

Took mine off first thing this morning, not many others have done yet round here though, only saw a couple of cars without discs on.

I have two discs, one from last year and this years, didn't remove last years & just put the new one over it!

The insurance idea wouldnt work because I have a multi car (and any other vehicle) policy so how would I go about displaying it in every car I drive?

Likewise trade policy holders wouldn't have a disc for every vehicle they use.

Perhaps the disc holder can be used for other display items, such as National Trust stickers that are sent inside each annual year book.

The NT stickers are self adhesive so no need for a holder.

I thought I'd be the only one who had that silly thought!

I had the thought, but don't have the right discs. The earliest one I have is from 2012. My car was new May 2003.

If all this information is going to be read by cameras are the DVLA, Police and Local Authorities actually going to do something about the number of illegally spaced registration plates on the road ?

My ex got stopped because a hand held one used by the police mis-read her plate. It read a D as B because the fixing point was in the middle of the D. And no, it wasn't a different colour cover on the fixing, it was yellow (as it should be on a back plate)

I think the MOT expiry should be displayed in the windscreen, a new car would have a date 3 years from the day it was registered.

A lot of the problem with uninsured drivers is estate chavs driving a car that does have an insurance policy, but with only mummy and daddy authorised to drive it.

Well I suppose not having to display the disk anymore is good news . At least now when some scrote nicks the disk off my motorbike I wont need to run around organizing for a replacement at my expense and inconvenience .

last time my parents had their car MOT'd it came back with a blue sticker on the inside of the windscreen with the expiry date of the MOT on , I thought this was a general thing that MOT test centres did now . Perhaps not .

My tax expires at the end of October so I'll be one of the first to pay monthly

As for the holder,I can't remove it because it's got the card that identifies my car as being on a service/maintenance plan so I'll be using it for either my work parking permit or national trust sticker, just as soon as I've found some of that clear plastic sheet stuff to stick it to...

Mine does not run out till 31/08/15 and I shall be leaving it just where it is !!

Mine runs out 31/12/14, and I will be glad to be able to go monthly as its about £300 a year! The joys of a big and fairly powerful car!

Haha no pasties, but unleaded at about 33mpg- I was expecting around 25mpg in honesty!

Its got 20 valves and a turbo but the turbo bit is a little sssh, as I told my wife it doesn't have a turbo to convince her when I bought it :roll:

I had a 107 before so I went from one extreme of the tax brackets to the other!

Both wrong. Its only a 4 pot 1.8 as well. I haven't quite worked out why VAG put 5 valves per cylinder. Same engine as found in the Golf GTI Turbo but in a bit more conspicuous form:

Ooh, good choice - I nearly bought a Toledo a couple of years back, though it was a TDI.
I've also recently been looking at various cars with the 1.8T because it is a rather nice engine.

Ah, the joys of only paying £20 a year in road tax - not really worth doing it monthly :P
Not a particularly small car either - VW Golf 1.6 - TDi though and with Bluemotion

Was interesting the other day observing, whilst sat in traffic, of vehicles coming the other way to see how many cars didn't have a disk anymore. My tax disc runs out July next year and it is likely to stay where it is until then

I took ours out on the 1st. No idea why, as tearing off the disc holder with it has left loads of sticky residue and the wife, justifiably, doesn't quite understand why I did it.

But I did it because I could! The downside is that I've never had any problems relating to a tax disc - until now...

Use some deodorant on the residue and the chemicals should break it down after a few minutes.

Ooh, good choice - I nearly bought a Toledo a couple of years back, though it was a TDI.
I've also recently been looking at various cars with the 1.8T because it is a rather nice engine.

Its a lovely car. Because saloons don't sell well in this country all Toledos were loaded with nearly all of the optional extras for free from 2003 onwards to get rid of the stock prior to the new model being launched.

Mine set me back the measly sum of £1000 about 3-4 weeks ago. It only has 95k on the clock with Full Service History and every invoice its ever had from new, including the original purchase invoice.

Usually find a bit of lighter fluid gets rid of any glue residue from glass . Just be careful not to get it near any paintwork cos it can also like to eat paint as well .

A friend of mine (ive not tried it yet ) swears by wd 40 to get rid of glue residue from stuff like bumper stickers as well

Boiling water and work quickly. Melts the glue but you need to be super fast.

I bought a sign written car about 6-7 years ago, and I "borrowed" some polishing compound stuff from a car valeter friend which did the job well with elbow grease.

I suddenly had a thought earlier today and now feel rather stupid.

Why didn't I leave the tax disc holder in, but then put in an ancient tax disc from a year or two ago? Given you don't need to display one, I can't imagine it being an offence to show an out of date one.

Why?

Because all those nosey do-gooders that check cars parked on their street will then see the ancient disc and think 'aha!' and then go calling the police/council only to end up looking like idiots.

In fact, I think everyone should put an old disc in their window. Maybe even for another vehicle just to get their hearts racing!
