According to brfares.com, a ticket from Taunton to Cardiff Central would allow you to do this if it is an "anytime" ticket, but not if it's an off-peak one or an advance one.

I can't really say much more than that based on the information I have to hand.

Splitting a single journey at Weston Super Mare is £1 cheaper anyway so you could just buy separate tickets.

This split saves almost £15 on a day return between Taunton and Cardiff.

In which case there is only an Off Peak Return fare (SVR) available for return journeys, with an 8A restriction meaning you can travel on any train and break your journey on your return portion only.

Except it reduces your flexibilty on the return journey, as you'll need to go via Weston. So no direct trains on the mainline.

This is true, but I always prefer to go via Weston if it means I can avoid the Voyagers. Even a 150 is better than those things, lol!

The cheapest flexible Taunton - Cardiff return ticket (without a Railcard) is the £40.70 Off-Peak Return Taunton - Cardiff route Any Permitted. This meets your needs (in particular, plymothian has pointed out that it allows break of the return leg of the journey only) but cheaper combinations of tickets are available.

The cheapest suitable combination of tickets I can find is:
  • £13.30 Off-Peak Day Return Taunton - Filton Abbey Wood
  • £12.00 Off-Peak Day Return Filton Abbey Wood - Cardiff Central
Total £25.30.

In each direction, this combination requires you to use a train which calls at Filton Abbey Wood. You are not allowed to use a train which passes through that station without stopping. In practice, this does not appear to place any limitations on the outward leg of your journey: all Saturday morning journey opportunities from Taunton involve a train which calls at Filton Abbey Wood. But some of the afternoon travel opportunities from Cardiff to Weston do use trains which pass through Filton Abbey Wood without stopping.

If you would prefer to avoid this restriction, I recommend this combination:
  • £13.30 Off-Peak Day Return Taunton - Bristol Temple M
  • £13.00 Off-Peak Day Return Bristol Temple M - Cardiff Central
Total £26.30. This does not place any restrictions on your proposed travel because all relevant trains call at Bristol Temple M, and it costs less than the £27.10 split at Weston discussed in posts #3 to #6.
