I may be in the area of Taunton in the next few weeks with my 10 year old son.

Thought I would pop into Taunton station for an hour or so, one evening, say 7 or 8pm.

What am I likely to see at that time of night? Is there a better night than others?

Is the station barrier at the time?

finally, what about parking? Any better spots in the area?

No Barrier from one side of the station although they do block access to the staircases if there are no more trains due to head towards Bristol or Reading. That said they have kindly moved the barriers when I have asked so that I could go over to the platform to catch the sleeper to London Paddington.

I have never seen to much freight pass through Taunton apart from the occasional ballast train or the fuel train. most likely to see a few HSTs, Voyagers and Classes 150 & 158.

As above, there is little freight at Taunton, and most of what freight there is comes from Fairwater Yd. so you might be lucky and catch a ballast train heading out to an overnight possession somewhere!

Parking is a plenty on the down side!!

Otherwise, at that time of evening, you'll see a couple of voyagers, a few FGW HST's and a unit or two!!

I'm not 100% sure but i think there is a northbound clay sometime in the evening on a Wednesday/Thursday night ( can't remember which one sorry )!

It should pass Taunton heading towards ADJ at around 7.30 - 8.30pm!! I'll have a look properly later for the official timing!

The train is 6C39 St.Blazey to Newport, through Taunton on Thursday evenings
around 7.30pm. There is also an 'as required' scrap train from Exeter to Cardiff
around the same time on a Thursday.
